Five years after the regular series another instalment was made. You might ask why. Were they going to start a new series? If so, then they took a wise decision not to proceed with these plans. Up Pompeii had a very limited set-up: the members of the Ludicrus Sextus family get involved in some (sexual) mix-up and Lurcio has to find a solution for it all. A large part of the comedy rested on Howerd's shoulders, particularly his music hall interaction with the crowd. The writer used to invent plots and dialogue for the Carry On films, but there he had the luxury of varied settings. Here he had to tell the same story over and over again.

This episode offers nothing new, no clever reference to current affairs, no spoof of existing drama, just another sex farce. Worse, it could taint the memory of a short series that had some great moments.moreless
