  • Carry On Pompeii.

Talbot Rothwell was the writer of that British institution, the Carry On movies. This episode of Up Pompeii reminds you of them, probably because it has that other stalwart of Carry On, Barbara Windsor. It's quite startling to have a pure cockney character in Pompeii, even if you're used to Howerd's anachronistic acting style. So you wind up with a mini-movie, using the same, lame jokes as Carry On, but you miss Sid James. Wouldn't it have been great to have Dextrus Secundus played by that South African cockney rascal?

In the second half of the episode Lurcio has to pretend to be an eastern potentate. That puts the show in pantomime territory, even further away from the Roman original. Strangely, Howerd later made a short series with such a premise, Whoops Bagdad.moreless
