  • A good example of how this show couldn't care less about rules.

"Up Pompeii" was a result of a combination of things: the success of "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum", the classic farces of Plautus and the unique character of Frankie Howerd's comedy. This episode uses a historic event as its central plot (albeit without too much accuracy) and then plays with the conventions of theatre. The main character talks to the audience, makes comments about goofs (whether they were real or not, is a matter of debate) and moans about his duties as an actor. A large comedy bit is centered around Howerd's difficulties in playing both Lurcio and Caesar. Interest in the actual plots gets lost somewhere and the episode ends without a logical resolution, but that was never the point. Good fun was had by all, watching a bunch of actors desperately trying to get through a frantic half hour of television.moreless
