  • A Roman farce.

    8.5
A good example of this show, with a good balance of the classic plot for a farce and not too much reliance on Frankie Howerd's stage persona. Granted, this show was produced as a vehicle for the unique talents of Mr Howerd, but at times his stuttering asides to the audience became predictable. (I've noticed that most episodes are 35 minutes long, an unusual length for a sitcom. Are the extra five minutes the result of Howerd's interaction with the audience?)

The episode moves at an astonishing pace, with characters running in and out of doors, exactly like in some plays by Plautus or the later British equivalents of authors like Ray Cooney. Don't expect high culture, just enjoy the ride. (It's also great fun to see familiar faces a few years before they became big: Mollie Sugden and Lynda Baron.)moreless
