This story takes place in November 1907. At the end of the episode Hudson and Mrs Bridges decide to marry, but not immediately. They do marry at the end of the fifth season, in the summer of 1930, which means they were engaged for 23 years!
Richard Bellamy: Domestic servants! They're more loyal by nature than politicians.
Colour VTR studio recording took place in London Weekend Television's studios in Wembley on 11th and 12th March 1971.
This episode did not air in the US until 1988 under the banner of "The Missing Episodes".
Richard Bellamy is so impressed by Hudson's performance in court that he compares him to Marshall-Hall. Sir Edward Marshall-Hall (1858-1927) was a formidable English barrister who successfully defended many people accused of notorious murders. He was known as "The Great Defender".
Mrs Bridges is compared to Rosa Lewis. Rosa Lewis (1867-1952) worked her way up from kitchen maid to cook. She cooked for Lady Randolph Churchill and became a favourite of King Edward VII. Her life story inspired the 1976 series The Duchess of Duke Street.
