The Veronica Mars Season 1 Dossier: Episodes 17-22

Veronica Mars' stellar first season draws to a close in a slightly troubling yet ultimately satisfying way.

  • Episode Summary

After obtaining new information, Veronica is determined to get to the bottom of what happened the night she was drugged and raped, even if it means piecing together the fuzzy stories of every 09er at Neptune High. Meanwhile, Aaron throws a party for Logan, but inadvertently throws a wrench into Logan and Veronica's secret relationship.moreless

    • Veronica Mars (A trip to the Dentist)

This episode is defintly one of the best episodes I thnink. Last episode Veronica finds out that Logan Echolls her secret boyfriend was the one with GHB the night of Shelly Pomroi`s party. The night she was raped! Logan planned to go on a proper date with veronica on his dad`s boat but she never shows. This episode Veronica is ignoring Logan but he doesn`t know why. Veronica is in the shower when Backup starts barking so she gets out the shower puts on a robe and goes to the door sees it`s Logan she opens the door. Logan asks what he has done wrong so he can apoligise or explain so she tells him and veronica tells him that whoever did this to her is going to pay even if it was him! she investigates even more going through nearly all the 09ers until she finds out that Carrie has the answer to her question. It was Duncan she cofronts him about it and he explains to her that he was really drunk and he didn`t rape her that she as there aswell then he relizes she don`t remember and explained what happened. he left in the morning because he relized that he just slept with his half sister (She not achullay his sister) Veronica goes to apoligise to Logan and tell him what she find out. He says it fine and all he cares about is her. They go to Logans place and they go in kissing. SUPRISE! EVERYBODY is there including Duncan who just told her he could`t stop loving her. Logan tells them if theydon`t like her girlfriend then leave. That kind of revealed that they have been dating for a while!moreless
    • Finally Veronica wants to get to the bottom of what happened the night she was party-drugged and raped.

"A Trip To The Dentist" has to be my favorite of all episodes I've watched so far. It concludes the first big mystery of the season. And brilliantly! The way they constructed this episode, each 09er giving bits and pieces of information until it finally all adds up... Very nice! Fortunately Veronica wasn't raped that night, as she was actually having consensual sex with an equally drugged Duncan. Didn't see that coming at all. Kudos to the writer(s)! The Logan/Veronica moment in which they entered the surprise party together was really awkward. I'm glad that virtually everybody knows now that they are dating, so there'll be no more sneakiness involved.

All in all a nicely constructed, well-written and insightful episode that ends with a nice cliffhanger. Can't wait to watch the season finale!moreless
    • Review

Here's your 10. I now have a better idea on what the final two episodes of the season were for. This episode reveals what happened to Veronica on the night of the party that we were introduced to in the pilot and the next episode will focus on the Lily Kane murder case. A lot was happening in this episode and my emotions were going everywhere. To begin with - Logan and Veronica "get back together" in the beginning of the episode after the end of the last episode left Logan sitting on his boat by himself. I was happy. The flashbacks are clearly done very well - they tint of the dark blue really makes them feel very dark and informative and I love the way this show uses flashbacks only for important pieces of informaiton. Obviously everyone rememers something a little different from the night - which is another interesting perspective to the show. We finnaly learn Duncan and Veronica were the two that hooked up that night - but it wasn't rape it was in fact both of them consenting to do it. Veronica just doesn't seem to remember it. The acting by Teddy in the scene where he finnaly tells Veronica about their sibling relationship was just amazing all around. Perfect acting there. The big reveal is finnaly out - they are in fact brother and sister and we now know what happened to her on the night of the party. Aaron then throws a surprise party for Logan and the secret of Veronica and Logan is out. I didn't mind. Thought it was great for plot advancement. Veronica then finds cameras in Logans apartment and bounces home. I am sad. She comes home to find her mom sitting on the couch with her dad. There is now too much going through my head for me to compute. Logan once again twists how I feel about him - now I hate him again. Veronica seems shocked by her mothers arrival and I am just one episode away from seeing it all come to an end. Great episode, not sure if it will break into my top 15 episodes of all time list, but certainly the best of Veronica Mars to date.moreless
    • TV exellence. One of my favourite episode of all time.

Every show has an episode that all the fans go crazy for. This is one of them.

This episode truly tests our fandom. The best and most shocking part of the pilot for me was the revealation that Veronica was once raped. This to me was quite a jaw drop moment. Not only because it's really sad, but, because it's a teen-drama. I never would have thought that the writers would open up a storyline like this. But they did, and oh boy... after 20 episodes they return to it and what they do is what i call

The episode's filled with flashbacks. Everyone tries to remember the infamous party where Veronica got raped. I really love the way flashbacks are done in this show. They are extra-noir, and we always see them the way the given character recalls it. Basically everyone remembers differently to what Veronica was like on the party. Some remember to her as an easy going chick, some just say she was passed out all along.

I mentioned that this episode tests our fandom. Well, seeing Veronica being treated like a sex doll in the flashbacks is incredibly sad and I was really upset. I couldn't believe what Dick done to her. And what he intended to do... I for one, will go ahead and admit I've never been so affected by an episode. It was so emotional for me. I felt very very very sorry for Veronica.

In the end, luckily, she wasn't really raped, she just didn't remember. She and Duncan had sex, however Duncan left early because he knew it's wrong because Veronica is his sister. The scene where Duncan tells Veronica this is... amazing. Teddy Dunn's acting skills I would say are slightly above average, however his delivery in this scene is just amazing. And if that wasn't enough...

Logan and Veronica love in the end. They are just perfect together. After an episode where Veronica got torn apart it's really a relief to have Logan comfort her... until ironically Logan's dad makes a surprise party for Logan just to reveal to basically everyone that Logan and Veronica are together.

Once again, Duncan's reaction was great. Again, nicely acted out by Teddy Dunn. And... it was just a really good scene, very awkward, but good.

Okay, now you would think -- it's over. A sweet conclusion to a very eventful episode. Hell no. Veronica discovers a hidden camera in Logan's room. What's up with that? She of course rushes home just to find her mother home. DAYUM!

What an episode. So much has happened. While with the Lilly murder case not much has been done(although, maybe the hidden camera has something to do with it?) Veronica's character received a MASSIVE development that gave her character an entirely new side. Beautiful episode.moreless
    • Aaron tries to bond with Logan while Veronica discovers what really happened the night she was raped.

My favorite scene from this whole episode is when Veronica and Logan walk into his house, making out and all the 09ers are there for Logan's 'birthday'. The reactions are priceless and when Logan defends Veronica you can really tell that he cares about her. The scenes from the night of her alleged rape where funny and sad at the same time and it show Dick, Beaver, Logan and a lot of people at their worst. Duncan's revelation during this episode is sick and the scene between the two of them is really touching. Then at the end with the camera over the bed, I couldn't wait for the next episode to explain, but I feel bad for Logan always getting left for things that he didn't do or that he didn't intend to happen.moreless

    • TRIVIA (3)

      • Keith comes into Veronica's room and tells her that he found Duncan in Cuba. In Veronica's bedroom, there is a poster of Cuba posted on the wall.

      • The song Veronica or Dick, depending on whether Madison or Casey got the story correct, sings along to while drunk at the party, is the 'I Touch Myself' cover from Saucy Monky's 2004 album 'Turbulence'. A song originally performed by The Divinyls.

      • When Logan told everyone that he is dating Veronica Mars, Duncan stepped out of the house and went to his truck. He forgot where he put his keys, then he smashed the truck's window using a shovel. If you look very closely, his truck is new and modern. Why didn't the alarm go off (the beeping and annoying sound), considering that he came from the richest family in Neptune High. He can't be seen driving an old, obsolete truck because he is the "cool guy".

    • QUOTES (17)

      • Keith: I just can't help think that... your life would be better if you weren't working for me.
Veronica: Are you kidding me? You're the best father in the world. I mean, come on, look at me. I'm healthy, happy, good grades, all my own teeth... fancy shoes. (pause) I never would have gotten through this past year if it wasn't for you.
Keith: If it wasn't for me you wouldn't have to.

      • Logan: I'm allergic to shellfish.
        Aaron: Of course. I forgot.
Logan: You didn't forget. You never knew.
Aaron: I did. I just got you confused with Trina, that's all.
Logan: I'm the one allergic to shellfish. Trina's the one who's allergic to work.

      • Dick: Dude, what the hell are you doing? Please tell me this is like, some new reality show called My Skank.
        Logan: Goodbye, Dick.
        Dick: What?
Logan: Get out of my house! You have a problem with Veronica, you leave. Actually, you have a problem with Veronica, you're pretty much dead to me, so just, like, evaporate or something, I dunno.

      • Logan: I'm not leaving.
Veronica: It's kind of a bad time.
Logan: Okay. So I should come back when, never? Will that work for you?

      • Veronica: (to Sean) Wow, you know when you're about to soil yourself, you get a little twitch right in your eye.

      • Veronica: You wrote 'slut' last year on my car at Shelley's party. Why?
Madison: Because 'whore' had too many letters.

      • Veronica: (voiceover) As a rule, people that hate you aren't that helpful. There were about a hundred people at Shelley's party. Ninety-eight of them would walk over my corpse for free gum.

      • Veronica: Fun?! Like have-sex-with-unconscious people fun?

      • Weevil: Well, I'm just lookin' out for Veronica. So if you think you're gonna lay a hand on her the way you did Lilly...
Logan: Don't you even say her name.
Weevil: Actually, she kinda liked it when I said her name.

      • Logan: Hey, I have to tell you something.
Veronica: I'm sorry, we're past the confessional portion of this program. We're on to the make out.

      • Wallace: I don't care about me. I just wish I could do something. Or say something.
Veronica: You don't have to say anything. That's kinda the good part.

      • Logan: (to Veronica) I can't take that I hurt you when all I want to do is protect you.

      • Dick: Look at that. Beaver's getting all the love, and Dick's flapping out in the breeze.
Luke: Please. You have like, the hottest girlfriend ever.
Dick: Much like fake boobs -- great to look at, but they don't do as much as you'd like them to.

      • Keith: (to Clarence Wiedman) I'll be sure to send a postcard. You can hang it in your cell.

      • Logan: You do not want to start with me today, Paco.
Weevil: Are you sure? It was in my day planner under 'Goals'.

      • Veronica: Honey, I'm home.
Lianne: So am I, honey, so am I.

      • Veronica: I made out with Dick and Casey?
Madison: Puh-leaze. You made out with the garage door.

    • NOTES (5)

      • In this episode, Weevil accuses Logan of having hit Lilly while they were dating. This was left over from a dropped storyline, where we would have eventually found out that Duncan, during an epileptic fit, had hit Lilly and left bruises. Weevil mistakenly thought the bruises were left by Logan. Since this storyline ended up being cut for time, Logan's name was never cleared until Rob Thomas revealed the reason behind Weevil's comment, months after the season ended.

      • Kyle Gallner, who plays Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas, previously appeared in an episode of Smallville. Many people think that Veronica is very similar to the character Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack), who appears on Smallville.

      • This marks the first time the entire principal credited cast members (all six actors) appears in the same episode since episode no.14, "Mars vs. Mars". It is also the episode with the largest credited guest star cast (14 actors) to-date.

      • Working title: "Up on the Roofie".

    • ALLUSIONS (4)

      • Keith: I know. Of all the countries under military dictatorship in all the world.

Keith paraphrases one of the most famous lines from one of the most famous Humphrey Bogart movies Casablanca, where Bogart's character is talking about his ex-lover, who has just entered his café: "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine."

      • Veronica: You can keep asking, but you're not the fairest, trust me.
Though originally a faery tale, the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is most well-known for the Disney movie. In the movie the Wicked Queen has a magic mirror, and she's constantly asking it who the fairest is and becomes infuriated when it tells her that it's Snow White. Ah, vanity thy name is Madison.

      • Logan: Right up until my esophagus closes up, cuts off my air supply, and I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Logan appropriately quotes Shakespeare to remind his father of his allergy to shellfish. It comes from Hamlet Act 3, Scene 1: "For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, when we have shuffled off this mortal coil."

      • Duncan: So did they give you a jet to take me back home? Or am I supposed to click my heels?
Reference to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz who clicks her ruby red heels 3 times to go home.
