Neptune High School
Wallace and Veronica are at her locker talking about their Friday night plans which amount to little. Wallace shows Veronica a flyer he picked up in the gym cryptically advertising a "Blowout". As they head outside, Veronica explains that it's for a 09er party, 09ers being those who live in the prestigious 90909 zip code. The symbols mean that the party starts when it gets dark at Dog Beach on Friday. Veronica can decipher this because she used to be an 09er.
A party is in full swing at the beach. Logan is there with his girlfriend, Caitlin Ford. Duncan arrives with his friend, Troy Vandegraff, and he and Logan are introduced. Duncan and Caitlin both know Troy from the marina. Troy is to start at Neptune High. The party is interrupted when Weevil, Felix and some of the bikers crash it. Logan and Weevil face off. Logan tells Weevil it's a private party but Weevil tells him that the beach belongs to the bikers. Logan reminds Weevil that it's not 15 on 4 this time (referring to the events on the beach in the pilot) then attempts to insult Weevil by telling everyone that Weevil's grandmother is the Echolls' family housekeeper. Weevil takes it in his stride but Weevil's cousin, Chardo, attempts to throw insults back at Logan. The fun is interrupted by a siren from the sheriff's car. Using the loudspeaker, he tells everyone to stay where they are. Everyone scatters. Deputy Sacks asks Sheriff Lamb if they are going to go after them. Lamb says no, they'll just take the beer for a cook-out at his place.
Weevil and Chardo are playing a video game when Lamb and Sacks arrive with a warrant to arrest Letitia Navarro, their grandmother, on charges of credit card fraud. Someone took credit card offers out of the Echolls' family trash, opened up accounts and rang up charges. Lamb infers that Weevil is a loser for letting his grandmother take the blame for something Weevil did. Weevil is shocked.
Cliff McCormack (the lawyer from the pilot) is with Keith in Keith's office. Veronica is listening from her desk. Cliff is representing Mrs. Navarro and doubts that she decided to steal from the Echolls after ten years loyal service, particularly as the cards were used to buy things like video games, limo rides, Magic Mountain tickets, motorcycle gear and piercings. Cliff and Keith agree that Weevil is the culprit. Veronica suggests that Lamb is setting Weevil up, but Keith says he starting picking Weevil up when he was twelve. Keith asks her to work on the case as he is tied up with something else.
It's late as Veronica pulls up behind Weevil's motorcycle. As she looks at the new paint job on it, Weevil comes out of the house, warning her that he has hospitalized people for less than what she is doing. She tells him she is working for Cliff to help Mrs. Navarro. Weevil says that Cliff told him to confess. Veronica says that Cliff can't be blamed for thinking it's him, given Weevil's reputation. Weevil then recounts what everybody says about Veronica – that she likes it a little freaky, that she spies on Duncan and sends him pictures of herself. He tells her that she likes to think she's a big outsider but when push comes to shove, she still thinks like and is one of them (an 09er). He tells her to take off.
Keith and Veronica are having breakfast. Keith is reading the newspaper while he eats. Lamb and Sacks arrive at the diner, and while Sacks sorts out their order, Lamb joins Keith and Veronica to gloat by asking Keith how the dirty picture biz is. Keith turns it back on him by reading out loud the lead story about how the sheriff's department has lost a prisoner. Lamb passes the buck by saying the deputies involved were ones Keith had hired. Lamb then taunts Keith about the upcoming one year anniversary of the murder of Lilly Kane on October 3rd. He asks Keith if he is going to dress up like a sheriff and crucify a grieving father. Keith asks Lamb if he finds it strange that the case was solved by an anonymous tip from a person who did not come forward to collect a $100,000 reward. Lamb reminds Keith that the evidence did not support the ex-sheriff's theory that Jake Kane killed his daughter, because there are eyewitness and phone records that put Kane nowhere near the house at the time of the murder. In fact, all the Kanes were accounted for at the time of Lilly's death. Lamb leaves, reckoning he has scored when Keith only responds with a smile. Veronica tells Keith she has to go too, as the counselor wants to see her for her schedule and attitude, not necessarily in that order.
Neptune High School, administration office
Veronica exits the counselor's office and waits at the desk for some paperwork. Troy is also waiting at the desk. He checks her out and tells her to give him a smile before being called into the counselor's office. Veronica gets her paperwork and is about to leave when she runs into Wallace. He has been made an office aid as the diving class he signed up for was canceled. Veronica is very happy about this and asks him to get her Weevil's attendance records. Wallace is reluctant, but she cajoles him into it.
Neptune High School, journalism classroom
Veronica enters and meets Mallory Dent, the teacher, explaining that the counselor has directed her there as she is "disconnected" and "passionless". Caitlin is in the class and interrupts to ask Ms. Dent if she can go to the gym to talk to people for a student poll. Ms. Dent reminds Caitlin that it is a multicultural school with a diverse population of students from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Caitlin doesn't get it and Ms. Dent has to spell out that it means she shouldn't just interview her friends. Caitlin's eyes roll and she leaves. Ms. Dent turns back to Veronica who asks if she can just take pictures. Ms. Dent says she'll have to do more but that she can start there. Veronica says she has some experience with a camera and proves it when she rejects the simple classroom camera for her own super duper model. Ms. Dent tells her the school newspaper is doing a feature on Bodie Chang, a competition winning surfer and student at the school. She introduces Veronica to the person doing the story: it's Duncan. Oblivious to their discomfort, Ms. Dent suggests they travel together to Gold Coast to do the story. They quickly confirm they'll make their own ways there.
Neptune High School, lunch area
Veronica is going through the attendance records Wallace has provided. Wallace is a little put out that Veronica is helping the guy that duct taped him butt naked to a flagpole. She teases that he can really hold a grudge. She discovers that Weevil was in auto shop on seven of the eight days that on-line purchases were made with the credit cards. There is no Internet connection in the auto shop and she thinks it is unlikely Weevil could have slipped out seven times.
Veronica arrives as Cliff and Keith are discussing Mrs. Navarro. Veronica announces that she doesn't think it was Weevil based on the attendance records but is shocked when Cliff tells her that Mrs. Navarro has been released because Weevil confessed.
Neptune High School, classroom
Veronica is working at a computer screen. Nearby, Logan is at another screen, but is talking to Caitlin. He tells Caitlin that the family had to let Mrs. Navarro go as she couldn't be trusted. Caitlin confides that Mrs. Navarro was rude every time Caitlin was over. Veronica announces that she finds it interesting that 90% of all identity theft is committed by relatives of the victim. Caitlin snots that no one cares what she thinks since she stabbed all her friends in the back. Veronica points out that Caitlin seems to care. Logan asks Veronica if she joined the newspaper so she could be around Duncan. Veronica simpers sarcastically that she did it to be closer to Logan, who is amused by the response. Veronica says that she may be put in their fourth period government class. Caitlin, attempting to score a point but in fact revealing exactly what Veronica wants to know, tells her that they have computer lab fourth period.
Neptune High School, lunch area
Veronica is going through Logan's browser history from computer lab as Wallace joins her. She ascertains that Logan visited the Neptune Grand Hotel website and that although he didn't make any reservations, there is a charge on one of the cards for the honeymoon suite.
Neptune High School, car park
Veronica is pissed to discover she has a flat tire. Logan, passing by, is superficially sympathetic but is probably responsible. She tackles the tire. Troy approaches and she is persnickity, explaining that it is her second mysterious flat since school started and she has to be at Gold Coast in thirty minutes. He offers to help and introduces himself. She does the same and he pauses, saying he should never listen to "those guys", referring to Logan and the other 09ers, watching them from a distance. "I mean really, who names a daughter Trampy McBitch?" Caitlin arrives in a pink scooter and joins Logan. She wants to know what Troy is doing with Veronica. Logan asks why she cares. She says she doesn't but wonders if anyone has told him. Duncan arrives and approaches Troy and Veronica, offering Veronica a ride to Gold Coast; otherwise they'll miss it. Troy offers to finish up with the tire, and Veronica leaves with Duncan.
Road to Gold Coast, Duncan's car
Veronica is extremely uncomfortable in the silence. Just as it is about to get too much for her, Duncan refers to a song playing, which Lilly loved. Veronica agrees.
Veronica is in the same car but Lilly is driving. She asks Veronica why she joined pep squad. Veronica did it for the credit, but Lilly did it to get boys. Veronica is skeptical that Lilly needs any help on that front. Lilly says that her mother's philosophy is that you have to kiss a few toads. Veronica complains that all Celeste Kane ever says to her is shouldn't she be going home and asks Lilly why Celeste hates her. Lilly say she'd hate anyone she thought Duncan might love more than his mother, and that Veronica should watch Celeste who will break up the relationship if she can.
Road to Gold Coast, Duncan's car
Veronica asks Duncan to slow down when she sees Weevil on a work gang, cleaning up the side of the road. She and Weevil exchange a long look.
Veronica takes pictures, and Duncan interviews Bodie Chang.
Road to Neptune
Now dark, Duncan and Veronica are pulled over by a deputy who states that there is an impound notice on Duncan's car following a bunch of parking tickets and a moving violation on 3rd October. They each call their fathers, Duncan explaining that the tickets aren't his, they were Lilly's. A little later, the impound vehicle arrives, as does Jake Kane. He suggests the deputy call the sheriff and joins his son. He is surprised to see Veronica. Keith has also arrived, and he and Jake stare at each other across the top of Duncan's car. Veronica tells us that the last time the two men were in the same place at the same time was in an interrogation room.
Jake is being pressured by Keith about his alibi in an interrogation room. Veronica explains that Keith told him he was sure Jake was involved in his daughter's death. Jake, shown on the steps of the sheriff's department, Duncan at his side, told the press he missed his baby and was wrongfully accused. This led the fine people of Neptune to gather their pitchforks and torches to run Keith out of office, and Keith is shown leaving the sheriff's department, giving Inga a final hug. Veronica goes on to say that her friends jumped on the bandwagon. There are various scenes from Shelly Pomroy's party, from the lunch area when a purse is moved to stop Veronica from sitting with the 09ers, from Logan taking out the LeBaron's headlights, from Duncan ignoring her in the hallways at the high school. Her friends gave her a choice: stand by her father, or with Duncan and the Kanes. She chose her dad, and it's a decision she lives with every day.
Road to Neptune
Veronica tells us that the kicker is that she doesn't even know what is true anymore, and that maybe she gave up her friends and her life over an error in her dad's judgement. Veronica and Keith head back to Neptune in Keith's car. He asks if she and Duncan are starting to hang out again. She doesn't answer immediately, but when he asks again, she tells him it was just a school assignment. She asks if they can stop at the Neptune Grand for the Navarro case. He says it is solved; the confessed criminal is in jail. She stares at him in that "yeah, so is Abel Koontz" way and he relents and asks what she wants him to do.
Hotel Neptune Grand
Keith plays the aggressive father as he drags Veronica to reception. He intimidates the receptionist until Veronica pulls him back, saying she will deal with it. She explains to the receptionist that she was there a month ago with a guy, and that she is now pregnant. The problem is that because she was very drunk, she doesn't remember the guy's name, or even what he looked like; and that her dad was wondering if they have a surveillance video. She hands over the credit card bill. The receptionist steps away to talk to a manager. Keith and Veronica banter about their performance until the receptionist returns, saying that there is not surveillance video but she gives them a detailed bill summary. They leave, Veronica examining the summary as they go and she discovers that Caitlin signed for room service.
Neptune High School, journalism classroom
Veronica tells Logan that she knows he stole his mom's credit cards, but that he made a mistake when he let Caitlin sign for room service. He tells her to prove it, but as he walks away, his face loses its bravado. Ms. Dent arrives and shows Veronica the mock up for the school newspaper, The Navigator. Her picture covers the entire front page, and Veronica looks proudly at her by-line.
Keith brings in Ray Lee Hampstead, the escaped prisoner, for the bounty. He taunts the unhappy Lamb.
Neptune High School, lunch area
Veronica and Wallace are joined by Troy who invites them both, but particularly Veronica to a party at his place Saturday night. Veronica says she is not allowed in the first class cabin, but Troy thinks it is time for all parties involved to stand up and admit that maybe they were a little wrong, or sorry, and to let bygones be bygones. As he leaves, Veronica wonders if it would be that easy: to just say she was wrong and get her old life back. Logan passes and gestures rudely at her which shakes her out of her musing. She tells Wallace that she is going to nail him and leaves. Logan joins Duncan, as he watches Caitlin and Troy talk. He asks Duncan how long he has known Troy and is told a few years. Duncan wanders off to get some food, leaving Logan in charge of Caitlin's purse.
Neptune High School, classroom
Veronica has a list of phone numbers from one of the credit card bills. She punches the first number into her cell. It is Movieline. She cuts off the call and crosses out the first number. Scenes now cut back and forth between Logan in the lunch area and Veronica in the classroom.
Neptune High School, lunch area/classroom – Logan sees Caitlin's cell in her purse and palms it. He looks at the call records. Veronica gets a female voice on the phone. It is Jesse Ford. Veronica hangs up and crosses off the penultimate number in the list. She is down to the last number. Logan is staring at the same number, wondering who Caitlin is calling at one in the morning. Veronica punches in the number. Logan hits the number. He gets through and the phone rings. Veronica gets a busy signal. Logan watches Caitlin and Troy as he waits for an answer. A male voice picks up saying how daring it is for his baby to call him during the school day. Logan doesn't respond but stands on the wall, trying to see who is talking. Veronica calls Keith and asks him to run a number for her. Logan is still looking around as the voice laughs about Caitlin playing the silent game, suggesting the tickle game for later. Logan finally spots that the caller is Weevil's friend Chardo, who is saying that he can't wait to see her. Logan hangs up.
Neptune High School, hallway
Logan and a few of his mates are purposefully heading for Chardo, who is walking in front of them, when Veronica intercepts and pushes Chardo into the girls' bathroom.
Neptune High School, girls' bathroom
Veronica tells Chardo to confess. He feigns ignorance so she lays it out for him – how he was picking up his grandmother one day and she asked him to take out the trash; how he saw the virgin, high-limit, pre-approved credit card applications activated on a phone call; how he used them to take Caitlin out in the manner to which she is accustomed; how best of all, Weevil takes the fall leaving him in charge of the bikers. He says he regrets that, but he has a plan. He and Caitlin are going to run away together and then he'll write a confession to get Weevil out. Veronica tells him Caitlin is a thrill seeker and won't run away with him. He doesn't believe her. Veronica also tells him that Logan knows and wants Chardo's head on a stick. He doesn't care and declares that he and Caitlin love each other. Veronica asks why then, every time she sees Caitlin, Logan has his hands all over her. Chardo doesn't respond and exits.
Veronica is sitting with Mrs. Navarro, saying she doesn't understand as Mrs. Navarro knows it was Chardo who gave her a pendant purchased with the credit cards. The reason is that Chardo is eighteen with a record and would go to prison, whereas Weevil at seventeen just has to do four months of juvie. Veronica points out that Weevil thinks he is sacrificing himself for her. She is dismissive, so Veronica changes tack. She asks Mrs. Navarro if she knows what Chardo was doing with the card: that he spent thousands taking out a rich, white girl. Mrs. Navarro gets interested, particularly when she learns the girl is Caitlin Ford, whom she dislikes. Caitlin, so spoiled that she didn't like her ice cubes made with tap water. She asks to see the receipts. Later, outside the house, Weevil is delivered in a sheriff's department vehicle. He hugs his grandmother and then Veronica to thank her. Veronica lets him know that there is a warrant out for Chardo, and that Logan is after him as well. Weevil says he'll find him.
Ford residence – Chardo arrives on his motorcycle, speaking to Caitlin on the phone, saying that it is time for them to go. She is standing at an upstairs window, staring down at him, saying nothing. He is surrounded by 09ers and Logan arrives in a jeep, calling him the bad apple trying to steal his girl. He looks up at Caitlin, watching events unfold. Chardo says he already stole his girl, Logan was just too dumb to know it. Logan punches him in the face, and Chardo goes down. Logan puts a foot on his chest then hears the arrival of the bikers. Logan tells the other 09ers to hold Chardo and approaches Weevil. Expecting a rumble, he is surprised that Weevil wants to talk and they go behind the jeep to do so privately. After a moment, Logan reappears and tells the others to let Chardo go. The 09ers grumble but obey. Chardo climbs back on his bike and takes one last look at Caitlin who disappears behind a curtain.
Chardo is grateful for the rescue, but Weevil tells him he is out; out of the club and out of Weevil's life. Chardo begs to make it up to him, but Weevil is unbending and leaves Chardo to the other bikers to get a beating. As he gets on his bike, Weevil tells Felix to stop them before they go to far. Weevil rides off alone in the dusk.
Veronica asks Keith what made him go after Jake Kane. He wants to know why she is asking. She says the question defines their very existence, and she wants to know more about the case and the evidence. Keith says it's ugly, and he wants thoughts of Lilly's death out of her head. He adds that had he known the consequences – that her mom would leave and that school would be so tough for her, he never would have pursued Jake so aggressively. She still wants to know, but he won't tell her.
Veronica tells us that before Lilly died, they sneaked into the backroom of the sheriff's department and made themselves fake IDs which were sent to her, arriving after Lilly was murdered. She remembered them when the deputy who pulled Duncan over mentioned Lilly's October 3rd ticket. Veronica enters the sheriff's department, commenting that the useful thing about going on a Sunday was that the staff were new and didn't know her. She approaches reception and a woman, not Inga, comes to assist her. She explains that she has an outstanding ticket and shows the woman ID. As the woman goes away to get the ticket, Lamb arrives and asks Veronica why she's there. Veronica explains that she is paying off a ticket and asks if he's had any luck finding Chardo Navarro. She suggests Lamb talk to Keith as he is good at that sort of thing. Lamb tells her she has a smart mouth. The receptionist returns with the ticket as Lamb heads for his office. Veronica grabs it and leaves just as the receptionist calls her Miss Kane. Lamb pokes his head out of the office, confused by what he just heard.
Neptune High School, lunch area
Veronica is gazing at the ticket, the significance of which is that Lilly is pictured by an intersection camera, smiling and singing, almost two hours after her supposed time of death. Keith was right, the case does not add up and none of the Kanes have alibis that hold up. Troy joins her at the table, complaining that she didn't make his party. She tells him that she guesses that she didn't feel even a little wrong or sorry. Wallace joins them, and they talk about a new game at the Sac'n'Pac, until Veronica pauses to point out Caitlin being snubbed by the 09ers. Wallace says he'd hate to be her. Veronica, with pained familiarity, agrees that it would suck. The three head off to play the game at the Sac'n'Pac.
