Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Season 3 Episode 18

The Fossil Men

Aired Monday 7:30 PM Jan 22, 1967 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • From the book Science Fiction Television Series: Terry Becker mentioned the scene where Nelson and Sharkey first come ashore in the grotto. He told Basehart that the scene could be "kinda funny". Basehart followed his lead. When the episode was screened for the ABC executives, they found it hysterically funny. Irwin Allen was upset with Becker and Basehart for trying to turn his show into a comedy. Continuing on from the book Irwin Allen Productions -- Allen was even more annoyed when he learned that Becker and Basehart had read the script as written, with no ad-libs.

    • Uncredited roles:

Ron Stein and Ray Didsbury (Crewmen), Gary Epper and Dave Dunlap (Fossil Men)

    • It's difficult to understand how Sharkey was able to fire a 300-year-old flintlock, which presumably had been soaked in water at some point as well.

  • Quotes

    • Nelson: It looked like a caricature of a man made of stone. It could of been some kind of grotesque marine growth.
      Crane: Do you believe that?
      Nelson: No.

    • Sharkey: I didn't know ....
Nelson: It was loaded. That is one of the saddest phrases.

  • Notes

    • Jerry Catron also appeared in the Voyage episodes "Night of Terror" as a pirate and in "Destroy Seaview!" as the enemy leader. He was a security guard on the classic Star Trek episode "The Doomsday Machine".
