The Seaview is laying just off Manhatten island, Nelson and Crane are on a secret mission..... They both enter the flying sub in their civilian suits and head for a secret rendezvous.
The mission is so hush hush they cannot afford to be seen by anyone. (so Nelson leaves the flying sub on the surface in plain view! Also remember its bright yellow)
Nelson and Crane have collected a 3000 year old mummy case which has been in a museum in the USA for the last 70 years or so. No sooner have they got it onboard when Crane starts to feel unwell and eventually passes out (please don't ask how they managed to get the mummy case through the narrow door)
Back on Seaview Sharkey is like an expectant father waiting for news of Nelson and Crane he talks to Chip Morton about it but gets little change out of him (i always got the feeling Chip didn't really like Sharkey much in general)
Mean while back on FS1 the mummy case has opened and a shabby mitt has shown itself...
When the two get back to Seaview Crane is sent to sick bay and Nelson orders the sarcophagus loaded into a storage room.
The Doc gives Crane a mild sedative and reports to Nelson that all he needs is a good night's rest and to be put on light duties (no getting shot or taken over by aliens this week) Nelson, in the light of Doc's report on Crane makes Chip acting Captain and informs him how vital it is that the sarcophagus be delivered to a "eastern country" to ease tension and prevent a war, oh and naturally there are people who may want to provoke the war. To make matters worse they have only 70 hours to deliver it.
A figure wearing officers cloths enters the storage room torch in hand and looks things over (a good try at misleading us but voyage fans will know Chips tighter fitting trousers anywhere!) Chip reports to Nelson all is well and he's heading to bed. (don't ask why he didn't just put the light on to look around!) Nice to see all the cargo in the storage room tied down for once.
Naturally it isn't long before the sarcophagus opens and the mummy starts limping round the corridors. It's first two victims are a couple of crewmen carrying out electrical work. There is a brief session of the crewmen being thrown about and then knocked unconscious. The mummy has the power to make people forget things (good if you're a writer) and the two men wake with no knowledge of the mummy!
Next it lurches to Cranes room, why? I could never fathom. Crane wakes up and leaps out of bed fires at the mummy repeatedly (more loaded guns always to hand) Nelson Doc and Chip find Crane collapsed with no knowledge of the mummy or having fired the gun. He is sent back to bed.
Look out! Its the dreaded circuitry room...a figure wearing officers clothing enters (when will Nelson fit a bloody 5 dollar lock on the door?) and fiddles with some controls....
Meanwhile things take a much more serious turn with the saggy mummy when it strangles a crewman down in the flying sub just as he's noticed some sabotage down there. (Naturally he's not missed at all)
Chip is proud they have made good time and all seems well then Sharkey and Kowalski show him there true position from a computer print out. I love the way Nelson pulls the paper out of Chips hand and for a second or two Chip keeps his hands as if the paper was still in them...you can tell he's waiting for the Nelson blow up!
Nelson and Sharkey go down to the Circuitry room and notice the navigational controls have been messed about with and they are a good 10 hours behind schedule.
Nelson, never one to be beaten then announces he will forget all about the hush hush aspect of the mission and make a dramatic entrance with the sarcophagus in the flying sub. This idea soon goes tits up when Sharkey is sent to prepare the flying sub and finds the dead crewman and the wrecked controls. (well acted by Terry Becker)
Things look bleak but then Captain Crane wafts back to duty and announces they can still make the deadline if they run at flank speed all the way. Nelson informs him the engines will not be able to take flank speed for so long. Crane pooh pooh's this and orders flank speed and then orders armed guards for vital areas of the ship, after hearing about the all the fuss with the controls being changed.
Later on Kowalski is on guard outside the storage room when he goes in to investigate after seeing the door hatch turn. He is horrified to see the mummy case open and empty. The mummy attacks Ski (this is another episode where guns have no effect on the monster) Ski presses an alarm and before long Nelson and Sharkey are leaning over him. Nelson has announced thinks Ski will be fine.
Look out! Its the circuitry room again! The mysterious officer distracts a guard and delivers a lovely chop to the back of his neck and then enters to cause more mayhem. No half measures this time... it's the full blown pulling out huge cables which inevitably leads to sparks and explosions and Seaview crashing to the sea floor. (man they need a lock on the circuitry room door)
Doc has his hands full in this episode, Kowalski is in a state of shock, the circuitry room guard has a bruise on his neck as if he had been bludgeoned oh and Crane has had yet another attack and is back in a state of shock. The Doc is like a stuck record telling Nelson all the skipper needs is a goodnights rest! He would prescribe this for arsenic poisoning!!
The Seaview crew work hard and before long the flying sub is repaired and the ship can lift of the bottom and proceed. Nelson orders crane to rest in his cabin and informs him that he will fly the sarcophagus to the meeting in the flying sub as its their only option now.
The mysterious officer enters the flying sub and plants a great looking little packet of explosives to some controls but Nelson is waiting for him (he always knows) and a big rumpus and punch up breaks out! Nelsons wins (naturally) and we see that its Crane (no surprise) Nelson orders the Doc to give Crane something to put him out for 24 hours ( i think Nelson was fed up with Doc and his farting about good nights rest solutions) I also love the way Nelson lies when Doc asks how Crane got the welt mark on his face. Maybe he didn't want to admit he just gave the skipper a good hiding.
Meanwhile the mummy has grown tired of sneaking about and reveals itself to Sharkey! Luckily for him the mummy is slow and he gets away but is horrified to discover the watertight doors don't stop it!
Sharkey barges into the control room and starts telling Neslon "it's alive" Chip ( who probably is thinking Sharkey is running wild again) tells him to get a hold of himself. Nelson orders him to carry on and with no more information than "it kept coming for me" he knows exactly what he's talking about and orders Chip to meet him by the reactor room with some high power cable.
The mummy is launching an all out attack and getting very near to the reactor room...luckily Chip arrives with the cable and Nelson orders Sharkey to plug it in to the reactor controls (like you do with a nuclear reactor) with no thought for his own safety Nelson approaches the mummy and chucks the cable over it and orders the power on. There are some good effects of the mummy getting electrocuted and the collapsing. The funny thing here is Nelson walks over to it and announces that's the last trouble he will cause and then orders it slung back into the sarcophagus!! Not even the slightest bit curious as to how it came alive.
Well this episode ends in sick bay with Nelson in his flying jacket having just returned from dropping of the troublesome mummy and reassuring a resting Crane that he will be ok now. Crane asks how he explains it all?..Nelson looks full camera on and tells him some things are best left unexplained....
I bet Nelson didn't tell the mummy's new owners all the mayhem it had caused and that he had half fried it with cables from a nuclear reactor!
Enjoyable episode. Nice to see Chip as acting Captain.
It really was no surprise that it was Crane causing all the sabotage, even though Hedison had taken his ring off in order to keep people guessing.
