11/9/60Ben Harness kills Will Eckhart at the beginning after the two of them have an argument over Will's daughter Cathy (Susan Oliver). After being tried by the Wagon Train, Ben is hanged and the Train moves on. An Army patrol stops them and warns them not to use a particular pass because the Kiowa's are raiding there. The Lieutenant also warns that there may be a renegade on the Wagon Train who is warning the Kiowas in exchange for loot. Later Cathy is found dead on the trail. She had been hanged just like Ben Harness (John Larch). Major Adams and Bill Hawks then drive a wagon with four suspects away from the train to see what he can find. The four -- The Preacher (Martin Landau), Jeff Miller (Gregory Walcott), Mrs. Harness (Vivi Janiss) and Whitey (James Best) fill in the rest of the story and the truth finally comes out.

McCullough takes the body back to the nearby town, and finds that the man was the mayor and had a sterling reputation. He visits the widow and her young son, but does not initially explain that he was the one who killed her husband. McCullough, with the help of the town sheriff, tries to find an explanation for the mayor stealing a horse, while dealing with the mayor's brother and son, who are intent on revenge.moreless -
