  • A proud reunion became a memorial to its star.

    8.0
Ward Bond, who portrayed Major Seth Adams during the first years of Wagon Train, was a veteran of Hollywood and special friends with John Wayne and John Ford, with both of whom he worked many times. He was pleased when he got the old gang together for the series in which he was the star. The story concerned an alcoholic doctor unable to perform surgery. Major Adams recounts his Civil War history, including his friendship with "Sam," better known to history as General Ulysses S. Grant, himself an alcoholic. John Wayne appeared in this episode as General William Tecumseh Sherman, in a short silhouetted cameo, and several others of the old John Ford stock company were also in the episode, including Anna Lee, Hank Worden, Ken Curtis and John Carradine among them.

Ironically, Bond died of a heart attack shortly before the episode was to air. That week's TV Guide, which had a cover story about the making of the show and the reunion it celebrated, also included his obituary. Although he had actually taped a few more episodes that appeared later, this show became a fitting memorial to one of Hollywood's staunchest veterans.moreless
