    • Until the mid twentieth century, the doctors arsenal of drugs to combat illness was limited. Many diseases that today we take for granted as curable proved deadly. Most of these diseases were highly contagious and the onset chractarised by a fever. Smallpox was one of the most feared even though a vaccine was newly available; cholera another. Both diseases spread rapidly, especially when people lived so closely together as on a wagon train. Even if a doctor was available there was little to be done for the victim. The most that wagon train captains could do was to isolate the affected wagon to try to stop the spread of the disease. Major Adams is seen to do this on many occasions.
