Episode Summary

EDIT
Reptiles not only rule the seas, but the skies as well. This is the time of the pterosaurs, flying reptiles that dominate the Cretaceous skies. And at this point, none is as large as the massive Ornithocheirus, the largest pterosaur at the time. We follow the final days of one such Ornithocheirus as he makes his way to the mating grounds, soaring over the lands ruled by dinosaurs.moreless

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Utahraptor is depicted roaming the plains of ancient Europe. In reality, Utahraptor lived in present day-Utah. There is no evidence Utahraptor made it to Europe; in fact, the palentological evidence shows that during the early Cretaceous, North America was split by a shallow sea, which made it nearly impossible for Utahraptor to migrate to Europe.

    • NOTES (4)

      • The scene in which the flock of Iberomesornis mob the Ornithocheirus was cut from the US airing of the program. Sections of the scene were shown with the "Science of..." segments before each commercial.

      • The relationship between birds and dinosaurs is still a matter of debate amoung scientists. The prevailing theory is that dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds, though some scientists believe that thecodonts, dinosaur-like reptiles related to dinosaurs, were the ancestors of birds.

      • Ornithocheirus was the largest pterosaur of its day, but it was not the largest pterosaur of all time. That record goes to Quetzalcoatlus, who will be featured in the final episode.

      • Featured creatures: Iguanodon, Ornithocheirus, Polacanthus, Tapejara, Utahraptor, Iberomesornis (early bird), unidentified pliosaur.
