      • This was not the first time that Tolstoy's enormous novel had been adapted for television. Rather astonishingly, it had been presented as a single play for ITV and televised on March 26th, 1963. This adaptation, which was not generally regarded as a success, came via a stage version by Robert David Macdonald and was directed by Silvio Narizzano. A new actress, Valerie Sarruf, played Natasha, with Nicol Williamson in one of his earliest TV roles as Pierre and Daniel Massey as Andrei.
