  • The final episode of season 3, but what it really needed was a cliff hanger.

    7.5
“Old Bones” was a fairly good episode of Water Rats, don’t get me wrong, but I feel that the writers should’ve done a more suspenseful season finale, like say, for example, the final episode of season one. But, that wasn’t up to me. Unfortunately!

The only thing about the ending of this episode that really gets you thinking, is whether the relationship between Rachel Goldstein (Catherine McClements) and Jack Christey (Steve Bisley) is going to work out, or fall out, like the rest of Rachel’s previous relationships.

“Old Bones” begins with Gavin Sykes (Brett Partridge), Tayler Johnson (Raelee Hill) and Tommy Tavita (Jay Laga’aia) are onboard the Nemesis and come across a huge cruise ship. On board, there they see two women tourists, who have both had one drink too many. One of them accidentally falls into the water when she climbs onto the railing to take a photo of the three police officers. During her fall into the water, she loses her bracelet worth $70,000!

A woman comes to Rachel, concerned about her daughter’s boyfriend. She thinks that the boyfriend, Hugo Bjorling (played by Julian Garner) is dealing drugs and asks Rachel to do some “sniffing around”. Rachel does this, but not too long later, the woman is back at the police station telling Rachel not to worry about it and that she over-reacted (my thought – make up your mind!).

Meanwhile, Dave McCall (played by Scott Burgess) and the rest of the diving crew, have found the bones of a child underwater, whilst searching for the missing bracelet. Dave, who is quite passionate when it comes to child related crimes, is determined to find out who the child was, so that he can inform relatives. Rachel and her partner Frank Holloway (Colin Friels) continue their investigation into the so-called “druggy” boyfriend, Hugo. Their investigation leads to them finding out that there were two people working on the cruise ship, who were a part of a robbery (onboard the cruise ship) with Hugo.

Rachel and Jack’s relationship continues to spiral down the drain, leaving Jack no choice but to leave, as Rachel goes off to get some advice from Helen.

“Jack’s really trying hard and he’s really good in bed, but I just keep pushing him away.”

Overall, “Old Bones” was a good episode to watch, but like I said in the beginning of this review, there was no real cliff hanger, which disappointed me the most. It was however, given a 'nice' ending, with Rachel and Frank drinking beers at sunset.moreless

    • This episode was not supposed to be the season final, but because of Colin Friels' illness, season three was cut to 31 episodes instead of 32.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Helen: Haven't you had breakfast this morning?
      Rachel: Israeli police diet.
Helen: Oh yeah. Too busy doing something else, no doubt.
      (a bit later)
Rachel: Those Israeli's know how to eat, ey?
      Helen: Sticks!

    • Rachel: I think there's something wrong with me.
Helen: Why? Have you got a migraine?
Rachel: No, it's Jack. He's really trying hard, and he's really good in bed. But I just keep pushing him away.
Helen: Maybe it's your subconscious. She's telling you to keep away from cops.

    • Rachel: Oo, I love it when you sulk.
Jack: Hey, you don't want a relationship. You want a rent-a-root!

    • Frank: I thought you two couldn't keep your hands off each other.
Rachel: Yeah ... It seems he want commitment. I don't think I could do that.
Frank: I thought Christey was more like the love 'em and leave 'em type of fella.
Rachel: I think that's my problem, you know ... Ah bugger it. It's too hard ... It's too hard.
Frank: [laughs] Well, what can I say? Like, not my problem!
      Rachel: So you don't care?
      Frank: What, should I?
Rachel: [shakes her head] Anyway, screw you!

    • Jack: Hey. Dinner, Saturday night. I'm cooking.
      Frank: What's on the menu?
Jack: Geez Frank, it's a free feed.
Frank: Since when did you become domestic?
Jack: Since when did you get so picky?
      Rachel: Am I invited?
Jack: Yeah, it's at your place! It's osso buco.
Frank: I've got a date with a publican's daughter mate.
      Jack: A publican's daughter? She'd be a nympho, wouldn't she?
      Frank: Behave.

    • [Rachel loses a bet and has to give Frank $20]
Rachel: Should've made it ten ...
      Frank: Should've made it fifty!
