There was supposed to be a Shane Douglas v Rick Steiner match on this show, which Shane Douglas did a promo about on the last episode of Thunder, but it was scrapped.
The previous week, Eric Bischoff announced that he would be appearing on this episode with a major announcement. Originally Bischoff was going to announce that he and his company Fruscient Media were going to be purchasing WCW. However, the deal fell through when the Turner networks announced they no longer would be carrying wrestling. That left the door wide open for Vince McMahon to buy the company as well as the WCW video library.
The final match between Sting and Ric Flair was actually a request by Vince McMahon. He felt that it would be fitting since the two had wrestled each other on the very first broadcast.
WCW integrated with the ECW in a WWF storyline about "The WCW/ECW Alliance" following this telecast. The show would take place of the WWF programming and would be run by Shane and Stephanie McMahon in an attempt to disassemble the WWF. Eventually, all the WCW stars carried-over for the Alliance became official WWE stars.
This episode was deemed "The Series Finale" by TNT.
Parts of this show and parts of Raw Is War/War Zone were simulcast between the two shows.
This was the last episode of Monday Nitro.
