  • A great teacher makes a student want to learn. Kotter did this here on several fronts.

This is a great lesson about how a teacher needs to inspire students. By being willing to get through to Washington on his level withs omething he's interested in, Kotter shows geniune concern for Washington. By using this basketball challenge to help him see that he (Washington) isn't exactly an NBA superstar right now, Kotter makes him realize he might not be able to do it withouthumiliating him. And, finally, by losing yet making his point anyway, Kotter showed you don't have to win yourself to make a point. Just being there, on his student's level, but all thaat mattered. He earned wAshington's and many others' respect with this one, and I must say it's one of the finest examples of education I have seen on TV. It's how inner city teachers probably do it every year somewhere in the U.S.
