Season 13 Episode 25

Aired Daily 12:00 AM Feb 18, 1962 on CBS

  • Notes

    • Henry Barnes is responsible for many early innovations in applied traffic engineering, including the "Green Wave" of coordinated traffic signals via precise timing. He is also responsible for the application of actuated traffic signals (signals set off by the presence of an automobile, or by a pedestrian pushing a button... over and over again, ha!) Henry A. Barnes is also remembered for the "Barnes Dance," the practice of stopping all automotive traffic at an intersection to allow pedestrians to cross in all directions, even diagonally, if they wish. He served as Commissioner of Traffic in many cities, including Denver, Colorado; Baltimore, Maryland and New York City. For his WML appearance, he was new to his post in New York, having just been appointed in January 1962. He authored a 1965 autobiography, "The Man With the Red and Green Eyes." Henry makes a second WML appearance on EPISODE #799 of January 16, 1966. - Suzanne Astorino
