What's My Line?

Season 16 Episode 38

Aired Daily 12:00 AM May 23, 1965 on CBS

  • Notes

    • Robert Goulet will be singing our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, at the upcoming boxing match in Lewiston, Maine. Although the panel joked that they wanted Floyd Patterson to win, the famous match on May 25, 1965 at Lewiston was fought between Muhammad Ali (formerly known as Cassius Clay) and Sonny Liston. Ali knocked out Liston in the first round with what some claim was a "phantom punch." Many sports historians feel that the fight was fixed. - Suzanne (2004)

Although Robert Goulet was born in the United States, he moved to Canada when he was 14 years old and had never sung the Star-Spangled Banner in public before May 25, 1965. That night, moments before the rematch of boxing heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston, Goulet stood in the ring and began by singing, "Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early night..." Although he has now sung the song without incident hundreds of times since that night, Goulet says he is always asked about his infamous "Star-Mangled Banner" flub. He said he made a mistake on one word, and he wishes he could "take it back." - Suzanne (2004)
