Season 18 Episode 50

Aired Daily 12:00 AM Aug 13, 1967 on CBS

  • Notes

    • (1) "WML?" SPONSOR WATCH: Tonight's opening sponsor is Ivory liquid detergent.
      (2) "MEMOREX" WATCH: This episode is the fifth surviving pre-taped show this year, the ninth this season, and the sixteenth since EPISODE #820 of July 3, 1966, to leave out the show's origin of production from announcer Johnny Olson's intro.
      (3) "WML?" PANEL WATCH: "The star of stage and television," Phyllis Newman, is introduced first, for the 13th surviving occasion since Dorothy Kilgallen's passing, and the 15th overall. This episode is notable in that it brought together three of the most prolific guest panelists over the network "WML?'s" 17.5 year history - Miss Newman, Martin Gabel and Tony Randall. Mr. Randall was pulling double-duty here, as he also appeared on the live EPISODE #862 of May 21, 1967 which aired right after the taping of tonight's show. It would also be the end of the line for Tony on "WML?" on CBS. Over nearly 11 years, starting with EPISODE #327 of September 9, 1956, Mr. Randall appeared a total of 66 times - three as a mystery guest, and the other 63 times (including this evening) as a guest panelist. Of that total tally, 22 had been following Miss Kilgallen's death, one of which was as a mystery guest. He made only one appearance on the syndicated "WML?," as a mystery guest during Week #83 which was taped on April 30, 1970. The host in that time period was Wally Bruner, while the panel consisted of Soupy Sales, Meredith MacRae, Robert Q. Lewis (himself making his final set of "WML?" appearances ever, and his only set of appearances in the syndicated run) and Arlene Francis. This syndie episode was taped only months prior to Tony's landing the role of neat freak "Felix Unger" on the 1970-1975 ABC-TV series version of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple." Mr. Simon never appeared on "WML?" in either the CBS or syndicated versions.
      (4) MYSTERY GUEST: Tonight was also Woody Allen's final "WML?" appearance. From his first appearance on EPISODE #671 of July 7, 1963, Mr. Allen has been on the program nine times -- three as a mystery guest including tonight, and six as a guest panelist. He would not appear in any episode of the 1968-1975 syndicated version.
      (5) "WML?" CREW CREDITS AND CREDITS CRUNCH WATCH: As with the live EPISODE #862, David Roth is credited tonight as associate director. And once again, the end credits are shown in full screen mode, to the ultimate delight of the show's fans, as per the most recent airing by GSN on February 22, 2008.
      (6) Following the February 22, 2008 airing of tonight's show, GSN aired an edition of "I've Got a Secret," hosted by Garry Moore, which was originally telecast "from New York" on videotape on May 6, 1963. The panel, as always, consisted of Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan and Bess Myerson, and the celebrity guest was actor Cliff Robertson. - W-B (2008)
