When Families Grieve

Show Summary

When Families Grieve is the PBS special where Katie Couric and her Sesame Street pals talk and learn about dealing with losing a parent. The show covers the tough topic of dealing with the death of a loved one, in a way that children can understand, with characters they are comfortable with. The show talks about topics like talking to kids about death, showing them how to work through their feelings, strengthening relationships and more. Elmo is saddened by a loss of a family member, and his friend Katie Couric helps him deal with the feelings of loss by doing activities and talking it out, while also showing him real stories of families who are also dealing with loss. The documentary portion of the show takes viewers inside the stories of four families who have lost a family member, through combat, suicide, or illness. Their stories are very different but they share common struggles like dealing with sadness and anger, as well as celebrating the memories of a loved one. Death and loss are difficult things to deal with for people of any age, but it is especially hard for young children to grasp and cope with, but Elmo and his friends try to help on the PBS special When Families Grieve.moreless
