Bella Seaton is preparing to open a shop in her back room but hasn't told her husband who is still in the hospital. Mary is up helping with some sowing though she is barely fit to do so. Bella asks a Frenchman who is delivering stock to ask Jack Ford come round to do fit some shelves for her. Jesse is annoyed that a talented pupil of hers, Ronnie Fairburn, is going to take a job down the pit instead of getting more education. She decides to see the boys mother and after saying she shouldn't be interfering, Mr Ashton accompanies her. Mrs Fairburn explains that her poor relief was cut by the Board of Guardians when she enquired about getting her son work as a draughtsman. Jesse tells Ronnie to go round to see Tom before his first shift in the mine. Jack goes round to the Seatons and notices Mary health looks bad, which he mentions when alone with Bella. Jack refuses to take money for doing the shelves, but Bella tells him it's a wedding present. Jack tells her that if he had the money for a ticket to Australia to avoid getting married he might take it. Bill Seaton returns home from hospital to discover the shop in the house and demands it is all taken away. Bella explains to him that it'll kill the pair of them trying to survive if they don't have the shop and that she will leave and not come back if he won't have it. So he agrees, realising that he has no choice now he's in a wheelchair and it's the first time his wife has been the one who gets to make the decisions. Jesse finds a way to inform her parents that Mr Ashton has asked her to marry him again and she has excepted this time. Ronnie Fairburn goes off to start working the pit with Tom at 4am. The foreman gives him a dangerous job and says they have no choice, he'll have to do it. He gets killed by a fast moving coal tub. Tom says he's never going down a pit again and gets Jesse to tell the Ronnie's mother that he's dead. Jack Ford and Dolly Headley get married. He uses the money Bella gave him to buy champagne. It's the first time Dolly has had any and the first time she's seen a £5 note. Bella goes round to see Mrs Fairburn and gets Bill to mind the shop for the first time.moreless
  • Empire Day on the Slag Heap

    Full Episode

    S 1 : Ep 6 - 2/12/76

The pit strike reaches a negotiated settlement without a pay increase. Mary Seaton appears to have recovered from her bout of T.B. Jesse agrees to go out to dinner with Arthur Seaton which her parents don't think she should as she's supposed to be getting engaged to Jack Ford who is off arranging his work for Sir Horatio Manners. He asks if Jack is married, to which Jack replies that he hopes to be soon unless Manners objects, but that it's only because if he does object then he won't take the job and so won't have the money to get married. Jack goes round to the Seatons to see Jesse but her parents avoid mentioning her having gone to dinner with Arthur Ashton. At the dinner Ashton asks Jesse to marry him. Matt Headley informs Jack that he knows Jack has been having an affair with his sister Dolly and that she's pregnant and looking for money for an abortion. Jack says he agreed that if she got pregnant he would marry her so he and Jesse are finished. The pit men go back to work and the mine shaft collapses on Bill Seaton whose back is broken. The pit owners provide him with a private room in hospital and then offer him £100 and ask him to sign a receipt. Jack Ford turns up and discovers that he is being asked to sign a document accepting that the pit collapse was Bill's own fault. Jack and Dolly Headley both reluctantly agree to marry. Jack tells Jesse about Dolly's pregnancy and tells her he loves her. She tells him to leave. He informs her he isn't going to London as there's work to be done where he is and he's the guy to do it.moreless
  • Coal Comfort

    Full Episode

    S 1 : Ep 5 - 2/5/76

With the strike continuing people are forced to steal coal. When Jack Ford brings some coal round for the Seatons which he has bought off someone, Bill Seaton tells him to take it away as it is the same as paying the mine owners and is helping them instead of the strikers. It then occurs to Bill Seaton that he thinks there could be coal under the house, so he sets about digging up the front room. Billy Seaton has returned from university in Edinburgh saying he no longer wants to be a doctor and that he can work down the pit like the rest of them. Jessie and Tom try telling him that he's crazy but he won't listen. His father says he can do what he wants, which infuriates Jessie, but her mother tells her that their father will sort it out given time. Tom Seaton's leeks are stolen from his allotment and he and Billy track them down to a house where there is a mother and two young boys who are starving as she doesn't get a widow's pension. He decides it's okay for them to take his leeks whenever they need them .Billy offers to help with the digging in the front room but is told he's useless. Billy gets a neighbour's pump to pump out water in the hole which he operates while the rest have a break whilst watching him work. Billy goes on about Socialism which interrupts his pumping, causing his father to keep pointing out that he is useless and wouldn't be treated any differently if he worked in the pit because he is not a tradesman and merely an unskilled college boy. Billy finally gets the message that he would be better as a socialist doctor. Jack Ford turns up with some rabbits he has stolen and they all celebrate.moreless
