Whirligig

Show Summary

Whirligig is an educational series from the American Public Broadcasting System that gives audiences instruction on how to make their own antique furniture. Carpenter Norm Abram and his apprentice Kevin O'Connor bring cameras inside their Nantucket workshop, as they build furniture using old-fashion American carpentry techniques. The series starts with shop safety. Abram explains to the audience how to use woodworking equipment safely and what kind of protection a carpenter needs for each job. He starts each episode with a quick history lesson on American carpentry for the project at hand. Abram then jumps right into the project, with each episode adding a different woodworking task to the show, which includes building antique furniture and restoring old relics. The carpenter also adds home improvement and landscape design projects to the show's agenda. In early season episodes, Abram and Kevin show gardening enthusiasts how to create a large garden effect in a small yard. They also head to the roof of the shop to give audiences instruction on how to repair a leaky roof. Other episodes include deck building, ceramic floor layering, exterior house painting and maintaining lawns.
