With his hearing coming up, do you think the powers that be (writers / producers) commute Neal's sentence and change the series that much or will they keep him as he is today?

they'll keep us guessing, but they won't commute his sentence in the end.

Maybe they will commute his sentence but he will choose to stay and work for the FBI as a paid consultant. Perhaps he would actually become a member of the FBI and undergo training. Either way, taking off the monitor means that he, and the show, can go other places than just NY. Not only to other states, but to other countries like Italy and France where there are big art cultures and the potential for big thefts that might need his expertise to solve.

If he did become an agent, that would make things interesting with him and Mozzie. Mozzie is always a bit suspicious of "suits" as he calls them. What would happen if Neal became one of them.

I'm not sure he can become an agent with simple a commutation of his sentence. Commuting a sentence doesn't undo the original crime / felony, it only ends the sentence. This is why V.P. Cheney wanted President Bush to go further than commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby and give him a pardon. As it is Scooter Libby is still a felon and prohibited from certain jobs and depending up the state even voting, etc. A pardon actually undoes the conviction.

I don't think the FBI will hire as an agent a convicted felon. A pardon, though, would allow the FBI to hire the person as an agent (e.g. Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior has a guy who did time in San Quentin for murder but as he got a pardon ....). A commutation of Neal's sentence would end his prison time, but he'd still be a convicted felon.

Now here is a thought for a cliff hanger ... He gets his commutation everyone is happy. Neal says he still wants to work as a consultant, etc. Word then comes down that Neal is no longer eligible to be a FBI consultant, though!!!! Why? He's no longer eligible to be in the work release program that made him a consultant, as he's no longer serving his sentence. As such, the FBI has to go through the NORMAL FBI Consultant program to hire Neal. This program, though, turns Neal down because of his criminal past -- he's a felon and because of his various crimes (e.g. escape, forgery, etc)

Of course the Neal wants back in and the team wants him and they can't see how the FBI policies can be so "stupid." Yet, we see Neal having to leave and have to wait for next season to see how they bring him back into the FBI fold.

In the new season, they could show a break of say 6 months or so, during which time Neal does go around the world, etc - while the FBI gets their act together. Anyway, what do you think of this possible cliff hanger???

There is a good possibility that it will come down to adecisionthat "for now let the present status co continue, till the past events are more fully examined and investigated... "

But knowing the way the writers ended the previous seasons, they will leave it in a state of desperation for Neal but soothe it in the beginning of the next season
