Whitewash is an animated special addressing the issues of racism in modern-day society. Helene Angel (Serena Henry) and Mauricio Angel (Nderu Roberts), brother and sister, are attacked by a group of white thugs while walking home from school one day. After being beaten up without justification, Helene's face is spray painted white. The family and community of Helene Angel must come together to cope with and overcome such a horrifying violation of human rights. With a very powerful message, this special teaches children and adults alike the ongoing prevalence of mindless racism. First aired in 1994, Whitewash was directed and produced by Michael Sporn, of Michael Sporn Animation. Over the years, this special has won many awards and nominations, such as the Humanities Prize for Best Screenplay for Children and an Emmy Nomination in 1995.
