The new Doctor Who, David Tennant, goes home to Scotland and then to Northern Ireland to trace his roots in this enthralling episode. With the help of his parents and a genealogist, he learns that some of his ancestors came from the Island of Mull where they worked as subsistence farmers, paying the rent in peat cut from the bogs and kelp gathered from the beach. Tennant seems and open and thoughtful characters and, visiting Mull, he is visibly moved at the ruins of his forebears’ tone village, which was burned by the landlord who evicted them when the Industrial Revolution suddenly made sheep more profitable tenants. In Northern Island, Tennant talks frankly about his discomfort upon learning how fiercely Loyalist his Irish grandmother’s family was and visiting Derry, the scene of the Bloody Sunday massacre, he is profoundly disturbed. The scene in which he meets a relative in Derry is so short what you can’t help wondering what went wrong, and when he holds his great-grandfather’s orange sash, it’s as if he’s holding a snake. This excellent series continues to show how history affected individuals who endured it and how it still affects their descendants.moreless
