Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson says she had long had a scorched earth policy in regard to her family’s history. Why this is so isn’t really explained but it’s clear that she has had a change of heart as she plunges into tracing the antics of her ancestors. It’s a little odd too, that the lineage of such a posh British family (her father Nigel, was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Thatcher government and her brother Dominic, editor of The Spectator and The Sunday Telegraph ) isn’t common knowledge. In any case Lawson is descended from largely non-religious Jewish families, one of which founded the Lyon tea and cakes empire. During World War II, family legend has it that various members of the clan carried cyanide pills because they’d learned that they were on a list of people marked for special treatment should they fall into Nazi hands. Whilst Nigella’s grandfather who had joined the British Army’s catering corps was one of the first to arrive at Belsen. Going further back, Lawson visits Germany and the Netherlands to piece together the story of her earlier ancestors. The first of them to set foot on British shores, she discovers, was a chap who did a runner from Amsterdam after being caught pinching a bag full of lottery tickets.moreless
