Who Do You Trust?

Show Summary

In the fall of 1957 ABC added two shows to its daytime schedule: American Bandstand and Who Do You Trust, which had aired in primetime on CBS the year before as Do You Trust Your Wife? Edgar Bergen, who had hosted the CBS version, was not interested in hosting a daytime game show, so ABC offered the hosting duties to comedian Johnny Carson. Carson jumped at the chance, because he believed WDYT could make him a TV star in the same way You Bet Your Life had revived Groucho Marx's career. The game show itself was rather slight: two married couples with odd hobbies or backgrounds would be given three questions, the gimmick was the husband got to decide whether he or his wife would answer each question. The first question was worth $25, the second $50, and the third $75. The couple with the highest total then would go compete against the previous day's winners in a contest to name the most items in a particular category (for a prize of $500). The real fun came with Carson's chats with the contestants, and his participation with them as they demonstrated their hobbies. Carson was willing to try anything, such as getting behind the wheel of a motorized soap box derby car (and crashing it into the set) or trying out scuba gear (and falling into a large fish tank). Carson's personality and antics made WDYT a big hit. More importantly, NBC was so impressed with Carson's performance on this show that in 1962 they hired him to succeed Jack Paar as host of The Tonight Show. Del Sharbutt announced the show for the first season, then in 1958, he was replaced by Ed McMahon, which was the start of a television partnership that would last over a third of a century. After Carson and McMahon left for NBC, WDYT brought back Sharbutt to announce for the new host, Woody Woodbury. However the new version failed to click with viewers, and went off the air after one season. This only proved what many suspected all along that it was the host, not the show, that had attracted viewers in the first place.
