Widows

Show Summary

Welcome to the Widows guide at TV.com. "Facing life alone...they turned to crime together." Widows was Lynda La Plante's first TV series and it originally started out as a basic plot outline, originally entitled "The Women", with three others. All were returned as unsuitable, but the plot that became the series had "this is wonderful" written on it. This gave her encouragement and the basic plot became the story of the four women who decide to carry out their husbands' planned robbery after their deaths, and became a phenomenally successful series. A sequel wasn't originally planned - but, due to high ratings, ITV commissioned it for a second series and two years later, Widows II was broadcast as another six-part mini-series and ten years after that, Lynda La Plante made a follow-up to the series called She's Out. All three series starred Ann Mitchell as Dolly Rawlins. They proved a great success with viewers and remains to be Ann Mitchell's best-known role, and the series launced Lynda La Plante's career. The series was finally released on VHS and DVD in 2002, and now people can enjoy the series and its sequels once again over twenty years later. Widows was a Euston Films Production for Thames Television. Widows II was a Euston Films Production for Thames Television. She's Out was a Cinema Verity Production in association with La Plante Productions for Carlton Television. All three were commisioned and broadcast by the ITV Network. Widows won an award for "Best Direction" in 1983. Three novels based on the series were written: Widows (1983), Widows II (1985) and She's Out (1995). A movie of the same name Widows was made in 2002 in the US (by La Plante Productions and ABC-Greengrass Productions) and was based on Lynda La Plante's original series, but was set in Boston.moreless
