Episode Summary

EDIT
A Chorus Lie
AIRED:
Matt Damon makes a guest appearance as a clever charmer named Owen, who's competing against Jack for a spot in New York's Gay Men's Chorus. Truth be told, however, Owen is totally straight and is really after the group's big perk: a summer trip to Europe, all-expenses paid. Jack suspects Owen's ruse but needs proof. How about the hug test? Now a flustered Jack reluctantly turns to Grace to "in" Owen. Meanwhile, a scheming Karen tries to pass off an unwitting Will as her lover and not her lawyer when she discovers that she's the object of pity for being single at her own Valentine's Day partymoreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Sean Hayes selected this episode and "Went to a Garden Potty" as his tapes for Emmy consideration this season. Hayes lost to Brad Garrett this season.

    • When shown in syndication, the scene where Woman#1, Woman#2, and Woman#3 are trying to proposition Will, is edited and sometimes it is completely cut.

    • Owen (Matt Damon) said he was in a long-term relationship with his high school boyfriend "Ben". Although he was lying, this may have been a reference to Damon's friend Ben Affleck.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Beverly: You are a liar, Karen Walker!
Karen: What are you talking about?
Beverly: I don't believe that that man in there is your gigolo. I haven't heard one peep out of that room all weekend, and believe me I've been listening!

    • Owen: (to Grace) And you... thanks for the tea--and A.

    • Owen: (to Grace) Oh would you look at that, my hand seems to be going up your thigh. Right-uh right to your... ROCKIN' ASS!

    • Owen: I'm really exicted about going to Europe. I almost went once with my girlfriend...and by girlfriend I mean, (in an effeminate voice)
'Hey girlfriend what you wearin' to Europe? Ho!' It was a guy, huge arms.

    • Grace: Jack, why is my door locked? You better not be using my hair crimper on your bad place again.

    • Owen: 'Cause you won't get him...
      Jack: Thinkin' and a-hopin'...
      Owen: Wishin' and a-prayin'...
      Jack: Lyin' and a-cheatin'!
      Owen: Tubby and a-tone-deaf!

    • Grace: (While making out with Owen.) You're a good kisser for a gay guy, and I've kissed a lot of gay guys!

    • Karen: Beverly Leslie you look more like a woman every time I see you.

    • Jack: Why don't we start with some vocal exercises. [quickly] What gym do you go to? Why haven't I seen you in the clubs? And who have we slept with in common?
Owen: I work out at home. I'm allergic to smoke. And I'm in a long-term relationship with my high school boyfriend.
      Jack: Name?
      Owen: Ben.
      Jack: I know him.
      Owen: No, you don't.
      Jack: How do you know?
Owen: He told me you don't.

    • Jack: Uh, excuse me. As Aretha said to Gloria, Celine, Shania, and Mariah during Divas Live, "Are you trippin'? No one interrupts the Queen of Soul, bitch. Ok?"
Owen: Well, I believe she also said, "Hey, Cuba, Canada, cowgirl, Crazy, get out of my light and away from my snacks, bitch."

    • Karen: (To Beverly) You're almost as sweet as a regular sized person!

    • Will: (To Karen) Are you going to be in your room or here at the bar? Why am I even asking?

    • Karen: Now, I don't want you to be intimidated by these rich society people remember, they're just like you, only infinitely better.
Will: Oh Karen, I'm no more intimidated here than you would be in a room full of people who were getting into heaven!

    • Beverly: You!
Karen: Oh, good Lord! You scared me! Shouldn't you be in your tree making cookies?

    • Owen: I'm gay. We love bras, right?

    • Jack: I have in my apartment--
      Grace: My apartment.
Jack: In there right now is a hetero posing as a homo. I need you to help me get proof.
Grace: So you want me to 'in' him for you?

    • Jack: Oh, interesting. You gave me the straight-guy-double-pat-on-the-back-no-hip-contact hug.
Owen: Actually it was more the gay-guy-bend-at-the-waist-feel-your-delts-check-out-your-shoes hug.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Karen: Oh, good Lord! You scared me! Shouldn't you be in your tree making cookies?

Karen makes another joke about Beverly Leslie's short stature by comparing him to the Keebler elves.

    • Episode Title: A Chorus Lie

This is an obvious reference to the long-running musical and later film A Chorus Line.

    • Jack: (upon learning Owen is straight) Anne Heche Laffoon!

This is a reference to the actress Anne Heche, whom many claim she pretended to be lesbian when she was with Ellen DeGeneres. Heche's full married name was Anne Heche Laffoon, before divorcing her husband.
