Will & Grace

Season 1 Episode 4

Between A Rock And Harlin's Place

Aired Monday 9:30 PM Oct 12, 1998 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Does the red sweater Karen is wearing at the office look familiar? It's the same sweater we saw her pull out of a shopping bag to show to the cash-strapped Grace a few episode earlier, in "A New Lease On Life".

    • This is the first time we hear about Jack's ongoing project - "Just Jack."

    • You can see several posters for shows-- the obligatory Judy Garland one, 42nd Street, Guys & Dolls, etc.-- in the background, despite the fact that it's just a bar, not a venue. No self-respecting small gay bar would be without its show posters!

  • Quotes

    • Jack: So what'd you think of the show?
Will: Jack, you have a beautiful voice.
Jack: How about that dance sequence, huh?
Will: (slight pause) Jack, you have a beautiful voice.

    • Jack: I've decided to take my career in a whole new direction.
      Will: Forward?

    • Will: Owww.
      Grace: What now?
Will: Sorry. I was just gored by the comfy chair.

    • Will: Hi. What are you doing?
Grace: Sublimating my rage towards you with cheesecake.

    • Will: (Reading the Just Jack flyer) "A roller coaster ride of emotions." Who said that?
      Jack: A critic...okay, my shrink.

    • Harlin: (reading a flyer) Just...Jack?
Jack: The magic starts at 10.
Harlin: (to Karen) Was that a proposition?

    • Will (Standing up): You were right, I was wrong!
Jack: Hey hey! It's not the 'Will & Grace' show! It's called 'Just Jack'!!!

    • Harlin: I'm Harlin Polk. I'm supposed to meet Grace.
Karen: I'm Karen Walker. I'm supposed to be Grace's assistant.
Harlin: Well, you don't strike me as the assistant type.
Karen: Well, honey, behave yourself, and I won't have to strike you at all.

    • (Karen is at her desk filing her nails as Jack enters).
Jack: Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for Just Jack! (singing) Touch me in the mornin' ...
Karen: Honey, I'm busy. Touch yourself.

    • Jack: Karen, you can't just devastate me and kick me out. You're not my lover.

    • Jack: This guy, lemme tell ya... Thursday night, downtown at the duplex. Be there, be blown away.
Will: What are you talking about? You're not a performer.
Jack: I am now. Me, a piano, and a spotlight. I'm calling it "Just Jack." Here's my flyer. "Just Jack." One night only. "Just Jack."
Will: Why one night-- oh. It's open mike night.

    • Jack: (Singing) I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun. (Speaking) Huh, that actually happened to me!

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Will: It's a bad habit. I can control myself.
Grace: You know, Betty Ford set up a nice little place in the desert based on that very statement.

A reference to the famous Betty Ford Center in California, a rehab clinic to the stars and others suffering from various forms of addiction.

    • Grace: Oooh, not liking this.
      Will: Coriander
      Grace: Scary Spice.

An obvious reference to the Spice Girls, the British girl group, all of whom were given "spice" names by their creator. Scary Spice was Melanie Brown, who was the loudest and brashest member of the group.

    • Jack: (To Karen) You're nasty, Ms. Jackson!

This is a reference to Janet Jackson's song "Nasty", where she sings, "No, my first name ain't baby, it's Janet--Ms. Jackson if you're nasty."

    • Jack: ...Or do I go with the Julie Newmar basic-black?
This is a quick reference to Julie Newmar's Catwoman look on the campy 1960s version of Batman.
