Key Party
AIRED:
A birthday party for Will (who's 40 going on 37) is an uneasy celebration, thanks to a symbolic gift from his new lover that betokens commitment. The strangest present: a nude portrait of Will that's lacking in certain details.

Once again Grace meddles in things and makes it worse. Once again, Will feels sorry for himself because he has a crappy birthday. And in a weird twist, Karen all of a sudden remembers Stan's birthday. And he's dead.

Most of the time, Bobby Cannavale bugs me as an actor, but I like him as Will's boyfriend. The writing of his character is smart and cute, and the actor knows just how to deadpan deliver them. The highlights of the episode are the moments with him and Grace.

But the rest? Blah. Karen and Jack are so horribly selfish here, even more so than usual, and I just don't buy it. Over the years both these characters have shown decent emotional depth and I just don't believe they would ever ignore Will so blantently - not giving him a present, and then at the end of the party with a toast to Stan instead of Will. It just wouldn't happen. They are Will's best friends, no matter how selfish.moreless

    • Karen: (to Will) Oh, happy birthday, fruit. So, who we got here? (noticing Joe and Larry) Oh, Mo and Mary. Great, I won't have to take a sleeping pill tonight. (Sighing) Lord, all these gays in one room. Grace, you must be in hag heaven.
      Ralph: Uh, I'm not gay.
Karen: Ooh, hurray for my side.
Will: Everybody, this is my friend Karen. (signaling to Vince and Ralph) For those of you with guns, feel free to take the safeties off.

    • Vince: (to Grace about Will) You might have made him gay, but I made him good at it.

    • Grace: Your boyfriend's been in the shower for 20 minutes. Of all the cops you could've dated, you hook up with Dirty Mary?
Will: Grace, he's a gay Catholic. He may never feel clean.

    • Will: I did want the key until Grace told me she had to talk you into giving it to me.
Vince: She only had to talk me into it be because she first talked me out of it.
Will: Grace talked you out of it? She told me that Ralph talked you out of it
Vince: Why did she do that?
Will: I don't know, why the hell does she do anything?
      Grace: (Whispering) She's crazy.

    • Will: I would like to say something. This is the worst birthday I ever had. I had to throw myself a party, I didn't get the key I wanted and now, instead of toasting me, everyone is toasting my fat, dead client. Whoopty freakin' doo!

  • NOTES (0)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Karen: (about Will) So, what are we going to get for Lady Gay?

This is a reference to the singer Billie Holliday, whose nickname was Lady Day.

    • Grace: Of all the cops you could've dated, you hook up with Dirty Mary?

This is an obvious allusion to the character in the film of the same name Dirty Harry, a rebel cop.
