    • Nathan: Grace, I... I just never imagined it'd be so hard, it shouldn't be this hard. I mean, if it was meant to be, shouldn't it be easier?
Grace: Wait a minute... are you breaking up with me?
Nathan: (long pause) Yeah... I guess I am.

    • Grace: Hey, good job! Great, perfect proposal food. Non-breathy, non-chewy, non-gassy! Hey, any change?
Jack: Lots. But I went ahead and bought myself a little something special.
(Jack pulls an apron out of the bag at puts it on.)
      Jack: You like?
Grace:(Reading the apron.) "Kiss the cook."
Jack: What? Cook?! That's an "O"?! That doesn't make any sense! Who goes on a date hoping somebody will kiss their cook?

    • (About Nathan's proposal.)
Grace: I can't believe you did that...like that, while we were doing that.
Nathan: Why? Was it not a happy time for both of us?
Grace: It was a happy time for you. It was on the way to a happy time for me.

    • Nathan: I asked Grace to marry me.
      Will: You...Oh, my god!
Karen: Oh, tell us everything! How did he do it? Did he get down on one knee?
Grace: Stop. Stop. No one is marrying anyone.
Nathan: She's just a little thrown 'cause I asked her while we were having sex.
Karen: Tell us everything! How did she do it? Did she get down on one knee?

    • Grace: (about Nathan proposing) Look, it's just not how I ever imagined being proposed to, okay? I should be holding a bouquet of wildflowers, not my own ankles!

    • Grace: (To Nathan, trying to get him to propose) Um, you know I-I-I actually need your help with something. Next week I'm having a dinner party and I need help figuring out the seating. It's gonna be you, me, Will and our friend Mary. How do you think we should sit?
Nathan: Ok, how about you, me, Will, Mary.
Grace: Well, um, you know I--I'd kind of like to sit next to Will.
Nathan: Ok, how about Will, you, me, Mary.
Grace: No, no...um, keep the Will and the you part, but make sure that Mary and me stay together.
      Nathan: Ok...Will, me, Mary, you.
      Grace: Swith me and you.
      Nathan: Will, you, Mary, me.
      Grace: YES! YES I WILL!

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Jack: Homo don't play that

This is a likely reference to the character Homey the Clown from In Living Color. His catchphrase when someone did something he didn't agree with or like was 'Homey don't play that'.

    • Will: Grace, in the real world, women ask men all the time. Rhoda asked Joe.

This is a reference to the 1970's sitcom Rhoda, a spin-off of the popular The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

    • Episode Title: Rules of Engagement

The title of this episode is a play on the military term. The rules of engagement determine when, where and how force shall be used. Some are made public such as martial law or curfews. This is also the title of the 2000 military film starring Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, and Guy Pearce.
