Episode Summary

Secrets & Lays
The gang retreats to a cabin in Vermont for the weekend, where Grace rekindles a romance with an old flame and tries to hide the fling from Will, who's pining on the eve of his would-be anniversary. Meanwhile, Karen's culinary efforts go up in smoke, as does Jack's attempt to cheer Will by dragging him to a gay pub, where the town barber-turned-hair stylist sidles up to him.moreless

Who was the Episode MVP ?

No results found.
  • An episode written to resolve Will's tread with michael, show who Grace would choose when having to choose between her best friend and a chance for love and just plain wackyness between Jack and Karen. So, cleverly plotted describes it.moreless

This is not all of my all-time favorites, but it’s a good episode. It’s a great idea to put the four of them in one cabin, in such close quarters. That is something that just can’t go right. I thought the protecting Will from his grief over Michael was a bit over the top, but the end was good. The point were Will admits he is not fine was very realistic.

Though I like him better with short hair, David Sutcliffe is still very hot and good in his portrayal of Campbell, Grace’s friend from high school. It is kind of romantic that two people fall in love after not seeing each other for such long period of time.

Throughout this a bit heavy episode there were Jack and Karen to make it a little lighter. There were a couple of good jokes from their side. I especially like the ones with Karen’s difficulty to remember names and with the strip poker. All together it was an amusing episode, but not one I could watch over and over and over again.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Will: Why are you acting so weird? You didn't eat any of Karen's cooking, did you? I thought I threw that whole thing in the lake. (There's a knock at the door) Uh-oh. It's back, and this time, it's personal!
      Grace: Don't answer that!
      Will: Why not?
Grace: There's no one out there. It's probably just the wind... knocking a pine cone against the door three times in rapid succession.

    • Grace: You look good.
      Campbell: You look really good.
      Grace: I can't believe you're here.
Karen: (to Grace) Honey, Campbell brought the wood in... Looks like he'll be leaving with it too.

    • Grace: I haven't felt this good in a long time and it's all your fault, Karen!
Karen: Hey I have feelings too you know.
(Jack and Karen both break out laughing)
Karen: Dammit, I was trying to keep a straight face!

    • Karen: I'm gonna cook. Men, go hunt wild game! There's a White Hen Pantry two miles down the hill.
(she tosses the keys to Will and Jack, who simply watch them fall to the floor)
Grace: Karen, the gays don't catch.

    • Jack: You know, no one took me on vacation when I broke up with... what's his face, uh... bleached hair, tattoo, goatee, who am I talking about?
Karen: God, I don't know honey. You just described a needle in a gaystack.

    • Will: Allow me, to go hunt and gather for the womenfolk.
Grace: Jack, don't you think it would be nice if you went with Will so that he didn't have to be alone?
      Jack: (Reluctantly) Ok.
Will: Very well, I will hunt and gather with our womenfolk.

    • Grace: Your cook's name is "Cook"?
Karen: No Grace he has a name! I just don't remember it. No wait a minute, it'll come to me, it'll come to me. "Where are my damn eggs... Paul!" Paul. Oh god, Paul is dead? Now who the hell is going to cook for us?!
Will: I guess this concludes the mourning period.

    • Karen: Stan had to take his kids to Scarsdale to see their real mother. What was her name? Wait a minute it'll come to me... "Stan, take the kids to see that bitch... Cathy!" Cathy.

    • Karen: Grace, it's 11:30, Campbell gets off work in half an hour. Don't you wanna find out if he's "mm, mm, good?"

  • NOTES (2)

    • The original broadcast order (and the order on the R1 DVD) has "Secrets and Lays" coming after the 2-part "Big Brother is Coming," so it made no sense that Will and Grace were acting like Grace hadn't been with anyone since Danny because she supposedly had just been with Will's brother, Sam.

The episode order on the UK R2 DVD follows the order according to production code, thus this episode appears before the 2-part episode "Big Brother Is Coming" and all story lines make sense.

    • The descriptions for this episode listed guest star Tom Bosley as "the town barber-turned-hair stylist" whom Will and Jack meet at the pub after ordering their drinks. His scene was cut and has never been seen.

    • Will: It smells like...pizza, pizza.

This is a reference to the Little Caesar's commercials from the 90s.

    • Will: It's back, and this time it's personal.

Will's comment about Karen's dreadful roast is a reference to the tag line from the 1987 film Jaws: The Revenge, universally accepted as one of the worst films ever made, even by its star.

    • Will: Give it up for Puff Mommy.

This is a reference to the music artist Puff Daddy.

    • Will: You're sure this is a gay bar? (Music Plays)
The song that plays as soon as they walk into the gay bar is the famous disco hit and gay anthem "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

    • Jack: She's such a brave little toaster.
A funny reference to one of the most overplayed cartoon movies of all time, The Brave Little Toaster.

    • Karen: Grace, it's 11:30. Campbell gets off work in half an hour. Don't you want to find out if he's "mm-mm-good?"
A quick reference to the Campbell Soup commercials of the 80's and 90's.
