Episode Summary

Joe is pleased to learn that the ticket he donated to the children's hospital's charity event brought in a staggering $10,000 dollars. But his mood soon turns sour when a misprint on the ticket (thanks to Brian) forces him to fly crabby old Carlton Blanchard on a cross-country trip for a reunion with his brother. Lowell and Antonio tag along, but the frustrations of the flight have Joe and Brian at each others throats and ready to go there separate ways. But seeing the fists fly at Carlton's reunion help the two make peace.moreless

    • Carlton: If you got bit by a monkey, what type of drugs would they make you take?
Antonio: I don't know, ask Joe maybe he knows.
Joe: You sure do ask a lot of questions Carlton?
Carlton: Well my mama always said, they was no such thing as a stupid question.
Brian: Run that one about the monkey by her sometime.

    • Carlton: If dogs sweat through their tongues, what are their armpits for?

  • NOTES (0)

    • The title alludes to the 1981 German WWII Submarine movie Das Boot.

    • During the episode, Fay refers to Carlton as "The Riddler". The Riddler was a DC Comics supervillain and an enemy of Batman known for being obsessed with riddles and puzzles.

    • When discussing where they have ended up following the emergency landing, Lowell says, "Well, the corn is as high as an elephant's eye" and concludes that they are in Iowa. Brian tells him that it's Oklahoma. The line Lowell says is from the song "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma!"

It is also interesting that Lowell mistakenly identifies their surroundings as Iowa in light of the comment Brian made moments before regarding the film "Field of Dreams," as that movie was set in Iowa.

    • After the plane has made an emergency landing, Brian is shown coming out from the cornfield and turns around, saying, "So long, Shoeless Joe." This is in reference to the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" starring Kevin Costner. In the film, Costner's character plows a portion of his cornfield to build a baseball field and the ghosts of great baseball players, the first being "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, come out of the surrounding cornfields to play.
