  • Good episode YET it's not the best Season 3 episode I've ever seen

    7.5
For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It's not the greatest episode I've ever seen. Yes, it is one of the weaker Season 3 episodes except there are much worse episodes than this. Yes, it could have been better BUT I didn't think this episode was too bad and I liked it. Also, Bella Thorne guest starred in this episode as Max's girlfriend before she started working for "Shake It Up". Bella Thorne is a very pretty girl and I thought her performance as Max's girlfriend in this episode was good. This episode doesn't quite make sense also because Jerry said that if anyone found out about the wizardry that they can wipe out their memories. I guess the writers apparently forgot that they put that so they make the plot where they are lying Max's girlfriend instead. Max finding a girl that actually has something in common with her was funny. Alex and Harper getting all excited and happy that Max has a girlfriend in the beginning of the episode was very funny as well. Max lying to his girlfriend saying that his name was "Tom Sawyer" was hilarious. Alex's line "Huh Tom Sawyer? That's the name of a song" and then Harper saying "AND from a famous book" was very funny. The whole scene with the gang lying to Max that they aren't wizards was entertaining as well especially when Teresa used Jerry's food to make it look like bird poop. Overall, it's not the greatest episode I've ever seen and could use more improvement but the episode is good enough for me to like it in my opinion. 7.5/10moreless
  • Could have gone further.

    7.5
One of the thing I truly loved about this episode was everything from Max's standpoint. Usually, Max is just the naive little brother who is always doing odd things in the subplot of the episode, but in this case, he takes center stage. We see Max grow up as he finally gets a girlfriend, one that is as weird and more-or-less dumb as he is. They've been dating for a while now, and he tries to keep her a secret because his is embarrassed by his family. Alex and Justin help Max by making themselves old and pretending to be Max's parents. But as it turns out, Max is not embarrassed by his mom and dad, he just didn't want Nancy to know he is related to Justin and Max. To this, we see some massive character development as Max reveals that he is tired of being compared to his siblings and everybody assuming he is just like them. I swear I never saw that coming. Max may act like he is the kind of guy who couldn't care less of what others think, but in the long run, he just wants to be accepted for he is, and I am totally there with him on that. I always thought Max was the most underrated character of the series, and as it turns out, upon being strange and hilarious, he is desperately in the need of being understood as a human being. Max totally deserved center stage for once. And the series could taken it so much further as soon as Max told Nancy that he is a wizard. I thought that was a good development, and it would have been good to have another person in on the Russo's secret because that could have taken the relationship through so many adventures. But unfortunately, as a sudden repeated substance in the show, the newest recurring character has to be killed-off at some point. Although, the inside gag about the disappearing dragon dog was pretty funny. Not that I don't think that there is a certain method to this, but Max could have gone through so much with Nancy, and they didn't have to get rid of her so darn quickly. Plus,Max shouldn't have acted so nonchalant about the break-up. And the thing with Russo's protecting their secret could have been written better. Although this show does well with development and surprises, they really need to be more open to creating new paths.moreless
  • It was Alright

    7.5
Max makes a girlfriend and he is taught to "be who he is", so he tells her the truth: he's a wizard. Now the family has to try to convince her that none of them are wizards.

I liked it, it was alright, but it wasn't great. Jerry once made a comment about "Erasing" Alex's and Harper's minds if they revealed the magic to anybody. Was that real? Can they do that? If so, they should've done that in this case, instead of lying about everything. Oh well, decent episode overall, my grade is about a B or so. Goodmoreless

I watched my first episode of Wizards of Waverly Place earlier this week. I did not really enjoy it, but I decided to give it another shot as a lot of people do seem to love it and Selena Gomez is a likable enough star as opposed to Miley Cyrus.

While the show is certainly no iCarly, it is mildly charming. There were a few genuinely funny lines here and while Selena Gomez never shines as a true star, she's not the worst lead I've ever seen (see the aforementioned Miley Cyrus.)

I will probably keep watching this, but it needs to be a little bit funnier for me to call myself a fan.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • It's revealed that Max's most prized possession is a dead lizard. In "Future Harper", it was mentioned that Max had a lizard that supposedly 'ran away'. This could possibly be the same lizard.

    • Justin and Alex state that their parents are thirty five years-old. This seems unlikely, because since Justin is 17 and Alex is 16, that would mean that Theresa and Jerry would have had them when they were 17.

    • Spell(s) featured:
The Middle Age Spell: "Make us old and barely alive, age us up to thirty-five" - Alex and Justin use this spell so they can pretend to be Max's (Tom Sawyer's) parents.

    • Max reveals that he doesn't like it how people are always comparing him to his siblings, and always assuming he is just like Alex or Justin.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Justin: I've brought my girlfriends to meet mom and dad, and I wasn't embarrassed.
Alex: That's because any girl you date is even more embarrassing than mom and dad.

    • Alex: I mean...you tell the truth, you get in trouble. You lie, you get in trouble. We're probably just better off not talking to each other!

    • Jerry: We need to come up with a really big lie.
      (everybody looks at Alex)
Alex: Don't look at me. I'm starting to think lying isn't the best thing in the world.
Theresa: Oh, you do not clean up your act now, young lady!

    • Alex: Max, I appreciate you wanting to lie about having our parents, but changing your first name isn't going to fool anyone.
Max: Oh, I know. But I changed my last name too. To Sawyer.
      (Alex and Harper start laughing)
Alex: Tom Sawyer? That's such an obvious lie. It's the name from the Rush song!
      Harper: And the classic book!
Alex: Wow, that song was good, I didn't know they made a book out of it.

    • (about Max telling Nancy he's a wizard)
Harper: Trust me, she's dieing to tell someone. The only reason I haven't told anyone is because I live here and I don't want to get kicked out.
Max: Well, then there we go, we have Nancy move in. Problem solved!
(Jerry gives Max a stern look)
Harper: Nancy's parents are not as cool as mine are about me living here. (to Alex who was just about to say something) Don't-say-anything! The only reason this situation makes sense is because I tell myself my parents are cool.

    • Max: (about lying to Nancy about his family) Mom, Dad, I didn't do this because I was embarrassed by you guys. I- I did because I didn't want Nancy to know I'm Justin and Alex's brother.
Jerry: (kicks his leg up in a gloating fashion toward Alex and Justin) Oh!
      Alex: (to Max) What?!
Max: Everywhere I go, people expect me to be as devious as you are or as smart as you are! I just wanted someone who doesn't compare me to anybody, 'cause I got a feeling I'm going to be good when I'm not compared to anybody.

    • Alex: The truth is only good for two things: getting grounded and getting someone else grounded.

  • NOTES (1)

    • When Max says "I didn't tell her about the dragon dog 'cause I still have no idea what happened to that", he is referring to the dragon, disguised as a dog, that the Russos adopted in the season 1 episode "Curb Your Dragon", which curiously was never seen or heard of again after that episode.

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Alex: I got it! I know how Jennifer can get Brad back.

This is a reference to the relationship between actor Brad Pitt and actress Jennifer Aniston. The two got married in 2000, but were divorced in 2005, soon after it was discovered that Brad was cheating on Jennifer with his film co-star, Angelina Jolie.

    • The "magic flying carpet ride" that Max says he took Nancy on is a reference the Disney film Aladdin, where Aladdin took Princess Jasmine for a ride on his magic carpet.
