In the early episodes of WRKP (probably the first 13), whenever Art sees Bailey, he asks, "Who is she?", even though he hired her.
That running gag was dropped through the rest of the series, which was good, because it was kind of annoying. Does anyone know why it was done in the first place?

It was just a joke, and they got rid of it probably because it got old fast.

It was probably dropped because it didn't make any sense, all things considered. If the Big Guy didn't hire Bailey, and Mama Carlson didn't (it's soon made very clear that Lillian doesn't know her, either), then who did? The nature of her job--in these early days, long before she starts doing newscasts--is such that a previous program director doesn't figure to have hired her. So who did? The producers couldn't figure out an answer to that, and consequently dropped the gag that raised the question. That's my theory, anyway.

I think it was more of a commentary on how women were viewed by those in the radio industry but was too cerebral for most of the viewers.
