So, I have perused a few forums devoted to Wonderfalls... the best show I never knew existed, but recently discovered... and I notice that there is one topic that no one is discussing, but which seems to be quite puzzling.  Namely: who or what are the muses?  Why do inanimate, animal shaped objects talk to Jaye?  Is she crazy?  Is it God?  Is something else entirely going on?

I don't have a theory, but I'm curious to see what other people think.

I think she just projects her subconscious to the inanimate objects kind of like they are her own Jiminy Cricket.

I think it's something more than Jaye herself. The things that happen because of her taking the muses' instructions seem way too elaborate to be coincidence.

And the results of her actions inevitably set off a chain reaction of consequences, I doubt this is just something projecting from within herself.

Yah, what the last guy said...

That's the mystery of it! I find it hard to believe the muses can just be a projection of her subconscious because they always cause unpredictable things to happen.  Things thatusually work out well for someone else.  That can't just be by accident.  I so wish this show had been continued so they could have developed answers to some of these questions!  FOX is so lame

I always suspected that the muses were connected to the falls somehow.  I wonder if there was supposed to be a mystic connection with the Native American tribes.  They sort of suggested that there might be a connection like that in the Totem Mole episode.

If I remember correctly, in a featurette on the DVD, the creator said that one of the original ideas of the show was "what if God talked to a girl through inanimate objects?" That sounds pretty slam-dunk to me.

gotahaloroundme: thanks for the info, I guess I need to check out the DVD extras!  That's really weird.  So if the muses are the voice of God, why did they decide to start speaking to Jaye specifically?  I guess we'll never know... *sigh*

I guess we would have found out had the show continued. Fox is evil.

I think it is an interesting mysterie, and it is somewhat good that it is left unsaid, the better for us to discuss, and have own ideas.

I think it has something to do with the native american thing, as sugested in one episode.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed, but I always thought it was kind of cool how Jaye "Surrenders to Destiny" like the Indian girl in the very first scene. Because of this, I'm inclined to think it has something to do with the falls themselves.
