Word Up!

Show Summary

Word Up! is an hilarious parody segment shown during professional wrestling broadcasts. Starring the popular and comic tag team Cryme Tyme, Word Up! was a weekly feature in which Cryme Tyme offered humorous and sarcastic definitions of a "word of the day." Episodes were often filmed at live wrestling events, although other clips were produced ahead of time and simply inserted into each broadcast. This tongue-in-cheek segment was a spoof of children's educational television videos that defined words or demonstrated basic life skills. Cryme Tyme, which split up in May 2010, was itself an overblown parody of urban "gangsta" culture. The wrestlers each wore many pieces of ostentatious gold jewelry, do-rags, baggy pants, and oversized tee-shirts; they also spoke in an affected "ebonic" dialect. Word Up! was recorded weekly until Cryme Time ended their professional partnership to pursue solo wrestling careers. It is still a favorite of many wrestling fans, and should not be missed by anyone who enjoys the backstage showmanship of professional wrestling events.
