Episode Summary

George v. Jeff Bernstein v. Christiane v. Tiffany v. Phil
World Series of Blackjack returns to GSN as the competitors battle it out for blackjack championship. The first qualifier features Dr. Jeff Bernstein (from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, a psychologist and last year's champ), Tiffany Michelle (from Los Angeles, CA, a pro card player nicknamed "Hot Chips"), George Mandilaras (from Greece, a construction worker), Christiane Hogenbirk (from Tucson, Arizona and formerly France) and Phil Dunaway (from Fairland, IN, a pro blackjack player.) Betting starts fairly conservative early on, but the match is marked by a surprise on the first knockout round. Later, a string of dealer busts leads to some big wins. Some strategic play leads to fairly large bankrolls, with an ever-shifting lead. The final hand proves to be very tactical, with all remaining players having a good shot at the win.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • George Mandilaras, Tiffany Michelle and Phil Dunaway were all standing for the final hand. They had all built up a nice bankroll and all within $10,000 of each other. George had $245,000, Tiffany had $242,500 and Phil had $235,500. All three pushed out max bets. Phil scored a blackjack and chose to play it as a blackjack, rather than doubling down. Both George and Tiffany doubled down. George won his double down and thus won the match. Tiffany lost hers, placing her in third. Phil secured second place and a spot in one of the two wild card rounds.

    • This qualifier features the return of Dr. Jeff Bernstein, last season's champion. Dr. Jeff fell behind early in the game and was forced to make some big bets in an attempt to remain in. He was unlucky and ended up with only $13,000 going into the game's first knockout round. Thus, the previous season's champion became this season's first casualty.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • George: Split.
      Matt: Don't listen to him.
Tiffany: I'm gonna do something crazy.
      Matt: Oh no.
      Tiffany: I'm gonna split.
Matt: She is gonna split her twenty. George is laughing.

    • Christiane: $55,000.
Matt: Christiane, she's so anxious to make a big bet, she actually shot over the maximum there. The Casino del Sol representative needed to get aggressive and now she's bet the most she can.

    • Matt: The dealer's fifth consecutive bust. This is like a dream table. The odds of that happening are over 1000 to 1.

    • Matt: Blackjack for Tiffany. Her first max bet and it's her first blackjack. Timing is everything.
Tiffany: (to the dealer) Thank you. I would kiss you if could reach you.

    • Tiffany (splitting 8s) I'm going to split my wait, here comes the blackjack jargon --- snowmen.
Matt: Tiffany regaling the audience with her deep knowledge of blackjack vernacular. Always split aces and eights, right?

    • Matt: George with 17. What's he thinking about here? And he hits the 17 and gets a 21.
Phil: You gotta be kidding me.
Matt: (Greek accent) Yeah, this is how we play in Athens.

    • Matt: (regarding Tiffany) Women have not traditionally fared well in the World Series of Blackjack, let alone a 22-year-old woman.

    • Matt: Only one event brings together both the feared and the fearless --- the most brilliant blackjack minds on Earth, where thousands have competed for one of forty coveted seats.
