World's Greatest Mysteries Easter Island Talking Boards: Natural Emigration Or Hidden Habitation?
AIRED:
Controversy. Conspiracy. Confusion. History is fraught with events -- from local to global -- that have never been satisfactorily explained. What caused the dinosaurs to perish? How were the Egyptian Pyramids built? What happened to the great Inca civilization? Was John Wilkes Booth part of a large, sinister plot? Was George Armstrong Custer sacrificed to save the Grant Administration? Is there anything happening in Roswell, New Mexico, that should be shared with American citizens? Who shot John F. Kennedy? These and dozens of other international mysteries are investigated, explored, unraveled and reported. Easter Island Talking Boards: Natural Emigration Or Hidden Habitation? The first human civilization on Easter Island was founded between the third and fourth centuries, AD. Located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, the history of the island includes famines, epidemics, civil war, slave raids and colonialism. It also endured a dramatic change in its ecosystem. This television program examines where the inhabitants of Easter Island originally came from and what has kept this barren, remote island more than 2200 miles off the coast of Chile populated for nearly 1700 years. Famed explorer Thor Hyerdahl claimed that the original inhabitants sailed west from South America. Other researchers speculate that Easter Islanders relocated from other areas of Polynesia. Is it possible that the history of Easter Island is hidden in the strange hieroglyphics found on the island's legendary --talking boards? To date, not a single scholar has been able to decipher the characters and translate this complicated language, called Rongo-Rongo by the natives.moreless
