World's Greatest Mysteries Kecksburg UFO: Meteorite Or Extraterrestrial Crash?
AIRED:
Controversy. Conspiracy. Confusion. History is fraught with events -- from local to global -- that have never been satisfactorily explained. What caused the dinosaurs to perish? How were the Egyptian Pyramids built? What happened to the great Inca civilization? Was John Wilkes Booth part of a large, sinister plot? Was George Armstrong Custer sacrificed to save the Grant Administration? Is there anything happening in Roswell, New Mexico, that should be shared with American citizens? Who shot John F. Kennedy? These and dozens of other international mysteries are investigated, explored, unraveled and reported. Kecksburg UFO: Meteorite Or Extraterrestrial Crash? On December 9, 1965, a large, brilliant fireball was seen by thousands in at least six states and Ontario, Canada. It streaked over the Detroit, Michigan/Windsor, Ontario area, reportedly dropped metal debris over Michigan and northern Ohio, and caused sonic booms in western Pennsylvania. Eyewitnesses in the small village of Kecksburg, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, claimed that something that changed directions and emitted a vapor trail had crashed in nearby woods. Several people from Kecksburg, including members of the local volunteer fire department, claimed to find a copper colored object in the shape of an acorn and about as large as a Volkswagen Beetle. The nearby Greensburg Tribune-Review newspaper had a reporter at the scene; the headline the next day was: "Unidentified Flying Object Falls near Kecksburg--Army Ropes off Area. Whatever crashed in Kecksburg, the U.S. military quickly recovered, loaded onto a flatbed truck, and took to Wright- Patterson Air Force Base outside of Dayton, Ohio. The official government report said the object was simply a meteorite. Multiple eyewitnesses dispute the government's assertion. This television program takes a sober look at why the military has maintained its silence about this mysterious object for than forty years.moreless
