Episode Summary

Mystique escapes from imprisonment while the X-Men repair and rebuild the Institute. Disguised as Alex, Mystique lures Scott into a trap -- leaving him stranded in the middle of the Mexican desert without his glasses. While Jean gets premonitions of danger from Scott, he is rescued from wolves by local oil riggers but is forced to flee. Jean and Professor X home in on Scott's mental signal while Mystique tries to capture him again and strand him elsewhere. Scott manages to even the odds by taking out the lights and making her as blind as he is without his glasses. He holds his own long enough for Jean to arrive and save him, and the two finally manage to acknowledge their feelings for each other.moreless

There's a couple of good throw away lines of addressing two common complaints with Mystique being in disguise and neither Logan nor Professor X caught on. Basically, they say her shapeshifting techniques are too advanced. Fine. But I'll take this time to say I'm not a big fan of her new design. She looks closer to the movie, which is to say now she looks more like a lizard. I preferred the classic "blue and white" design she had in season 1. Scott is left stranded in what looks like Mexico, without his visor, so he essentially is handicapped, and moves through the episode blind. But he still gets to tick some butt- which was cool to me.

What else was cool about this episode is that it seems Jean Grey and Scott have finally come to terms with their feelings for each other.moreless

  • Finally some more character development for the Jean/Scott relationship.

I really enjoyed this episode. It all starts out when Mystique breaks out of her prison, and decides to get her revenge on Cyclops, the man who imprisoned her earlier during the series. It's always nice to see continuity between episodes, and this is one of the best examples.
Meanwhile the X-Men are trying to re-build the Institute, and both Logan and Ororo notice how Jean and Scott feel about each other. It was obvious for quite some time they were in love with each other, but this episode finally explains more about their relationship.
Mystique impersonates Alex, Scott's brother and calls him to come pick him up. As soon as Scott gets there, Mystique traps him. Mystique's plan is to take away Scott's glasses and leave him abandoned in an unfamiliar place. She does so, and leaves him wandering in a desert. There, Scott must face coyotes, but he is saved by some workmen and taken to a hospital. The doctor tries to open his eyes, to examine him, but by doing so, his eye-beams destroy the hospital. He is later confronted by some street punks (led by Mystique in disguise), and is taken into a warehouse where he fights Mystique.
Meanwhile, Jean senses Scott is in danger and leaves with the other X-Men to save him. Her psychic connection with Scott seems to have increased, probably because of their bond (which was first mentioned in the first season; another beautiful act of continuity). Jean finds Scott and fights Mystique. The battle scenes are superbly animated, and Jean wins the fight. One thing you might have missed while watching the episode is that during the fight, Jean's hair takes the form of a Phoenix, most likely to let us know what her future will be. Unfortunately, there was no Phoenix Saga made during this series.
In the end, they all return home in the X-Jet. Jean puts the visor back on Scott's eyes and they finally kiss. All the others see this and agree with Wolverine, that it was about time that would happen. A sweet and funny ending to a brilliant episode.moreless

    • When Jean was pinning Mystique to the wall, you can see her bracelet on her right arm disappear. Edit
    • The Professor tells the searchers looking for Scott that he's within 5 miles of their current location. That's about 78.5 square miles--or 50,000 acres--of built-up area. Edit
    • Mystique throws a knock-out gas grenade at Scott in a small, contained hallway. He gets knocked out very quickly. She stands right near where the gas explodes (gas is shown billowing around her), yet she is completely unaffected. Edit

    ADD NOTES
    • This marks the second time in an X-Men cartoon what we see a POV shot from Cyclops' eyes and what the optic blast looks like through his eyes. Edit
    • It seems Scott and Jean have established a psychic rapport at some point, possibly when he reached out to her in "Power Surge". Edit
  • Quotes

    ADD QUOTES
    • Jean Grey: (puts the glasses on Scott) Ok! Go ahead. (Scott opens his eyes and sees her) Jean Grey: There... is that better? Scott: (puts his hand on her hand) Couldn't get any better. (Jean Grey reaches out slowly and kisses him on left his cheek and sleeps on his shoulder, with him holding her. In the meanwhile, Wolverine, Storm, and Professor X have been watching this) Wolverine: Well, it's about time. Storm: That's for sure. (They look at Professor X for approval of what they said. He lifts his left eyebrow up, smiles in happiness/recognition, and the show ends there). Edit
    • (Mystique is about to pound Scott more, until Jean Grey comes and stops her) Jean Grey: My turn! (She swirls Mystique around as if it was really a personal thing to her) Mystique: How sweet, girlfriend to the rescue!! Jean Grey: You got that right lady!!! (swings her more around and beats the cerebrums out of her) Jean Grey: Scott! (rushes to his side, and places his head gently to his chest) Scott: Jean?! Is it really.... Jean Grey: It's me. Don't worry. Mystique is gone. Scott: I can't believe you even knew where I was. Jean Grey: It must be a bond we have... I don't know how to explain it... Scott: ... you needn't have to. I just wish I can open my eyes, and see your face again. Edit
    • Scott: The problem is, how's the guy supposed to know if the girl feels the same way? Logan: Look, here's how I see it. I'd like to finish this job before New Year's, so if you don't tell her...I will! Edit
