  • Can they really keep it up? Back to back of the strongest episodes of the show? Wow! They are on a role, with the X-Men as they should be.

The Stuff of Heroes is one of X-Men Evolution's best episodes. Here, most of them are trying to keep a low profile, but the Fit hits the shan when Juggernaut is back on the loose! Storm and Beast have gone to a congressional hearing to try and quell the public's fear of mutants. The highlight of this episode is Cyclops' leadership being taken to a greater level. His butting heads with Wolverine was a great moment that is familiar to any long-time X-fan, so that was very welcome. But the decision to stay, to fight and to help against a seemingly impossible adversary is a great one. This is what the X-Men are all about.

This is also possibly the coolest example of powers displayed by most of the characters. From small stuff like Iceman's ability to magnify the TV image, Shadowcat phasing out of a sculpture of herself, to bigger stuff like later putting Juggernaut through a cliff. And finally, Cyclops using his full-force optic blast. Amazing.moreless
  • The X-Men fight the Juggernaut again, to prove to the world they are not a threat; they are no longer kids, they are heroes.

I really enjoyed this episode. Continuing the story started in the last couple of episodes, humankind has learned about the existence of mutants among them and of course, fear them.

Storm and Beast attend a meeting with the government in Washington concerning the "mutant problem", trying to explain that the X-Men are not a threat. Meanwhile, the other X-Men are hiding in a cave in some forest, trying to lay low until the problem will be solved. There are some great scenes featuring Cyclops and Jean, and you can clearly see how much their relationship has developed from the earlier episodes. Nightcrawler however interrupts them. Unfortunately Wolverine and Rogue have been followed by the army back to their hideout and they surround the cave.

Wolverine is ready to attack the soldiers, but Cyclops refuses. Why? Because this is exactly why humans are afraid of mutants. The conversation between Cyclops and Wolverine is impressive, as Cyclops states that they are no longer kids, they are X-Men, and they know what to do. Wolverine however refuses and leaves on his motorcycle. The X-Men step out of the cave and use their powers to take down the army helicopters, but making sure they won't hurt anybody.

In the X-Jet, they learn the Juggernaut has escaped again and is causing havoc, trying to destroy a dam and flood an entire city. The X-Men decide to go stop him. The fight is really hard (and incredibly well animated I might add), and in the end Rogue saves the day, by absorbing some of the Juggernaut's powers. As a "bonus", she also learns where Professor Xavier is: locked in the Juggernaut's cell. They free him, and in the end Wolverine returns (wearing a new uniform), and admits the others did a good job.

This episode was really good, and the start of a new, better season, much better than the first two seasons, in which not very much happened.moreless
  • After ignoring Wolverine's order to fight some military officers, Cyclops leads the X-Men into a battle against the unstoppable Juggernaught.

This is my favorite episode in the series. First off, it offers closure to the whole "Where is Professor X" story line. I thought the whole WWXD(what would Xavior do) thing was pretty funny, as well as Rogue's comment on her weight. Finally we get to see the President of the United States, and his reaction. The ending was very unexpected, and I think that this episdoe was well thought out. If only we could have seen clips of the New Mutants with the Morlocks. And I wish they revealed the name of the Chairman of the Senate. Overall, the best episode in my opinion. Magneto's appearence at the end went well with the question being asked by the newscaster on whether the persecution would end or not. "This is Frank Lee speaking, goodnight." Great final line with Magneto's expression. This is truly a must see episode.moreless

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • Where was Nightcrawler when he teleported in to the scene where Scott was standing up to Wolverine?

    • If there was a small TV in the X-Jet, why not just watch the hearings there?

    • When the chopper was falling, (before Kurt rescued the two guys) they weren't that scared as their faces would suggest.

    • At the dam, when the helicopters are trying to take down Juggernaut, he jumps on one, and busts his head through. Look at the pilot's neck and the side of his face. He has light Caucasian looking skin. Although, when it shows his face when he's afraid of Juggernaut's in the window, he has dark, African-American like skin.

    • At the dam, when Kitty phases Juggernaut through part of the floor. Surely this would have killed him, as he never phased all the way through, then his atoms would have become part of the floor, and I think that would have killed him.

    • In the cave, Scott blasts a small hole in Bobby's wall to blast the pepper gas missiles. The shortly after that, Logan drives out of the cave on his bike. The whole walls gone.

    • Why do Wolverine and Rogue lead the army back to the secret cave hideout, despite the fact they know they're being followed?

  • QUOTES (9)

    • The President: (to the press) My fellow Americans, all my fellow Americans, human and mutant. I stand before you now to clear the X-Men of all wrong doing in the giant sentinel robot disaster. The real criminal suspect behind the sentinel weapon has been arrested and charged. This has caught us all be surprise, but that isn't reason for any of us to judge people solely by their differences. To put it as simply as I can, we need to learn more, we need to be open minded, and we need to give this mutant question more time.

    • Juggernaut: (About the X-men) Mutant kids now! Too bad you don't have your poppa to help!

    • Wolverine: Listen kid!
Cyclops: No, we're the X-Men. We're not kids anymore. You trained us, and you know something, we're good. Very good

    • Jean: Spyke is trying to get his little T.V. working.
      Cyclops: So?
Jean: Maybe they're showing the hearings... I want to see how Storm and Beast are doing.
Cyclops: I'll tell you how they're doing. Terrible! The same thing is on every channel. Everybody has already made up their minds about us.
Jean: Oh would you stop that? It's not like we expected this sort of reaction. And your sulking isn't helping.
Cyclops: Wait, Jean... It's like we're supposed to be looking for the Professor and not hiding, you know?
      Jean: Scott, we'll find him.
Cyclops: (exasperated) Why hasn't he made contact, with his telepathy?
Jean: Scott, wherever Mystique hid him, I believe he's alright.
Cyclops: (more relaxed) Thanks, Jean. I do not know what I can do without you.

    • Kurt: Hello I'm Nightcrawler and this is Shadowcat.
Kitty: And this is your weapon system. (she phases her hand threw to short circut the weapon system)
Kitty and Kurt: Bye! (Kurt and Kitty teleport out of the air craft)

    • TV Anchorman; ...most mutants look like normal citizens.
Rouge: Normal!? Look at me, I look fat! Do I look that fat to you?
Logan: Shh! Pipe down, would ya? We're trying to keep a low profile.
Rouge: Well, I am not buying these cupcakes.

    • (seeing the end of the X-Men/Juggernaut battle on screen)
Spokesman: Wh-What did they just do?
Storm: They are doing what they were trained to do. To use their powers for good!

    • (Rogue and Wolverine get back to the cave)
      Scott: What is it?
Rogue: Choppers... it shouldn't take them long to find us
      (Choppers immediatly show up)
Rogue: Correction... it didn't take them long to find us.

    • Juggernaut: What are ya trying to do? Embarass me to death? Come on! Gimme your best shot!
Cyclops: You know, that's just what I had in mind!
(Uses first optic blast to remove Juggernaut's helmet, then a second blast to keep him at bay before ducking away from being punched.)
Juggernaut: You think that fancy visor's going to stop me? Nothing stops me! I'm raw power!
Cyclops: Yeah, you want it raw tough guy, then take it raw!(Removes visor for maximum optic blast)

  • NOTES (2)

    • At the end of the episode, we see Xavier, the X-Men and the New Mutants standing in the ruins of the Institute. Boom Boom is with them and in uniform, but she will not appear again until the concert in "Self Possessed", and even then we don't know for sure that she's back with the New Mutants.

    • In this episode Wolverine gets a new uniform which is black with golden stripes in the shoulders and with no mask. This new costume is based off the costume he wears in the Ultimate X-Men comic book line.
