Mesmero mentally controls Gambit into stealing half of the Spider Stone from Angel and is then captured by Magneto. Magneto finds out about the three keys that can free Apocalypse and tracks an escaping Mesmero to London. Angel goes to the X-Men for help and they pick up the trail to London as well. The two teams fight but Magneto finds and joins the two halves, which create a energy-spider. The X-Men set out to capture it while Magneto's team try to destroy it, weakening it down long enough for Magneto to eradicate it. Xavier reveals that Mesmero intended Magneto to destroy it all along - the spider was a guardian. Now the teams must find Mesmero before he acquires the third key and finally frees Apocalypse ...moreless

A chance for the original 5 to work together

The best thing about this episode is the call back to the original X-Men. We're talking about the first team: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman. This was a kind of cool and unexpected moment that we don't see coming, even as the team gets ready to go.

Unfortunately, nothing else really works in this episode. There's a silly game of baseball (or mutant ball, as the kids affectionately call it) where all the kids use their powers, and the main plot involves chasing down a giant glowing spider. At least there was a point: The coming of Apocalypse is almost here.moreless

The animation quality for this episode has really improved. All the scenes are beautifully animated and I think it looks rather impressive. As for the characters used in this episode, they were all great. Aside from the returns of Angel, Gambit and Mesmero, the X-Men team featured the five original members from the comics, which I found to be very cool and nice to see them as a team again.

Magneto and his acolytes are featured in this episode as the antagonists. The fights between the two teams are impressive, and the climax is when Magneto finds the two halves of the Spider Stone and unites them, unleashing a giant energy spider. The X-Men and the acolytes decide to join forces to stop the spider, and chase it through most of the city.

The fight with the giant spider was incredible, as each character does his best to stop it, and with the ever growing and better animation style and techniques the series has to offer, they look great. Magneto is the one who destroys the spider and proudly admits that the Apocalypse has been stopped. Xavier however, after he has scanned Mesmero's mind, is terrified to say that the spider wasn't the key, but the lock. That means that they accidentally opened the second door themselves.

And it's true, the second door of the Apocalypse has been opened. What will happen next remains to be seen.moreless

In addition to the current review, I would like to add that it may not be coincidental that the team sent on the mission to retrieve the spider stone is: Cyclops, Jean Grey (referred to as codename Marvel Girl) Angel, Iceman and Beast. These five were Charles Xavier\'s original five X-men. There were the team that appeared in the first issue of X-men. I think it was very tasteful and cool of the X-men Evolution writer\'s to make them all a team once again.moreless
