  • Spyke evolves, and the Morlocks take center stage.

    8.0
Spyke has been a very interesting addition to the show. His powers have proved more useful in battle situations than I ever figured they would be. When there was a chance his mother would take him home, I even thought I'd miss the guy. Here in Mainstream, he's having harder trouble suppressing his abilities.

Turning into more of a freak by the day, Calipso and the Morlocks take him in, and shockingly, he decides to stay with them- marking a goodbye to a character I'm not sure many other viewers warmed to anyway.

Besides Spyke's skateboarding/energy drink plot, Kitty, who gets the best subplots, got her driver's license. some amusing stuff.moreless
  • Spyke leaves the X-men and joins the Morlocks after his appearance starts to change for the worse.

    7.5
This episode is one of the few Spyke-centric episodes of the series. I know lots of fans didn't really care for his character, but I found him to be kind of interesting. But I suppose having him leave the team was a right move, as this episode also introduced the Morlocks.

The plot of the episode is pretty interesting, but unfortunately it will never be mentioned again (and I believe it wasn't really solved in this episode). A new energy drink, Power8, is causing mutants' powers to evolve and the (apparently) toxic slime the company has been dumping in the sewers is poison for the Morlocks.

Spyke's powers evolve as well in this episode, as he can't retract his spikes anymore and now his appearance is too different from a normal humans, he can't live among them anymore. So he decides to remain with the Morlocks, in the sewers. This is Spyke's last appearance as an X-Man, but not his last appearance on the show.

Overall, an enjoyable episode, but nothing special.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (9)

    • Trivia: If you notice, it seems that Evan is always drinking milk, trying to get calcium to form his spikes.

    • When Spyke is poisoned skating away from the Power8 competition, he happens to go to the one place where Beast used to clear his head, The Amphitheater!

    • When Kurt is cheering Evan on from the stands, it's Scott's voice we hear, not Kurt's.

    • When Professor X tests the Power8 in the test tubes, one sample liquid turns bright green. The other is clear. When he leaves with Storm, the tubes are once again visible. Both contain a blue-gray liquid.

    • When Evan walks in on the Morlocks discussing their next attack on the Power8 factory, he has only spikes on his face. In a close-up shot moments later, there is clearly a spike coming from his shoulder. A moment later, the spike is no longer there (wide shot).

    • When Evan is eating breakfast, he places the milk jug away from him, and in front of a sandwich. In the next shot, the jug is very near the sandwich, and is behind it (the edge of the plate is seen in front of the jug). Later, the jug appears to rotate 90 degrees without anyone touching it.

    • Near the beginning when the students play the joke on Evan, a boy removes the poster cutout from the spring. There are 10 distinctly placed spikes (probably push pins) on the cutout. Evan grabs it from him, and there are suddenly only 7, and they are in different places.

    • When Evan goes to sign in for the skate competition, there are three to sign in at depending on last name. He goes to the section that says "N-Z" even though neither of the first letters of his name E and D fall in the section.

    • When the security guards fired their guns, electric charges went up the ladder on the vat that Evan and that real little Morlock were on. She got electrocuted, but Evan didn't. And he was on the ladder.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Caliban: Callisto, bringing (Evan) here was a mistake.
Callisto: I had to, even if he wasn't poisoned. You've seen his mutation. With those plates growing on his skin, they'll never accept him topside.

    • (Outside the wrecked Powr8 factory)
Xavier: (Getting into his limosuine) Logan, let's go home.
Kitty: (In the driver's seat) Logan said I could drive. Hang on, we'll be there in a jiffy! (Zooms off to Xavier's dismay)
      (Back at the factory)
Spear: (To assistant) I want us back in production ASAP. Powr8 suddenly became a lot more valuable.

    • (in the Morlock tunnels, the X-men search for Evan)
      Storm: Evan!
      Spyke: I'm here.
      Storm: Evan!!!
Spyke: Wait! Stay back! I'm...I'm going through some changes.
Storm: That doesn't matter. Let me take you home.
Spyke: No! Not right now. I've just gotta take a break. Everything's so crazy right now.
Storm: But we can help you through this.
Spyke: Please don't worry about me or look for me. I'm with friends. Goodbye, Auntie O! (disappears in the mist with the Morlocks)
Storm: Wait, Evan. Don't go! Evan! (runs after him then stops and sulks in sadness)

    • (Upon learning of Evan gone missing, Kitty driving Scott's car returns to the Institute phasing the entire vehicle through the entrance wall)
      Kitty: Any news on Evan?
Kurt: Nothing. Come on, let's join the search. (The two teleport out)
Scott: (Terrified) I never want to ride in another vehicle again as long as I live!

    • (Scott is trying to avoid Kitty)
Jean: Sorry, it's either you or me, and it's not going to be me!
(Jean uses powers to levitate Scott where Kitty can see him)
      Scott: No! Wait, Jean!
Kitty: Oh, hey Scott. I was just looking for you!

    • Evan return home after the fight still spiked out:

      Storm: Evan?!?
Evan: Not now, Auntie O!!! (Slams the door to his room, then takes time to cool down and retract his spikes, which proves more difficult than before, then notices something wrong as he looks down his back in the mirror and still sees unretracted boneage running down his spinal column)
Evan: (With shock) What's happening to me?

    • (After another tough day at school, Evan has himself a little follower, or does he? )
Evan: You know, most kids don't want anything to do with us. What's up with you?
      Kid: Nothing. Just being friendly.
(The two come into the path of some thugs)
Kid: Hey, tough guys, remember me? You threw my books in the dumpster yesterday!
Bully #1: And what? You want us to throw you in today?
Kid: Why don't you just try it, Fathead! 'Cause see, I've got a mutant friend!
Evan: WHOA! This is why you're hangin' with me? To fight your fights? I've got enough problems. I don't need yours!
      Kid: Evan, wait!
Bully #1: (Mockingly) Yeah Evan, WAIT! Evan, Evan, Evan! Hey, aren't you that Spyke freak?
Evan: You wanna find out---KEEP PUSHING!!!
Bully #1: Come on! Where's your thorns? Show us what you've got!
(He and pals start shoving Evan around when Kurt comes into the scene)
Kid: Come on Evan, fight back!
Kurt: Oh, Ohhhh!!! (Expecting what'll happen as Evan becomes enraged and uses his powers to give the thugs a lesson of his own in front of several other kids)
Kurt: OK. Show's over! Thanks for coming! (Takes Evan into an alley where the two teleport out of the scene)

    • (After Wolverine gets duped by Scott and Jean into going along with Kitty's driving lessons)
Kitty: Yeah! All right! Let's go practice some freeway driving!
Logan: Wait for the gate! WAIT FOR THE GATE!!!
(Kitty phases the entire X-Van through gate)

(A few hours later upon their return, the van returns with metal pieces falling out and signs sticking out))

Kitty: Whooo Hoo Ho! That was totally awesome! I SO have the hang of this!
      Logan: GRRRRRRRRR!!!
Kitty: I can't believe the number of crazy drivers on the road. And so rude! So hey, when's lesson #2?
Xavier: Ah, Logan! So how did it go?
Logan: GRRRRR!!! Scott and Jean are right. I owe them! And I owe you, too---CHUCK!!!

    • Wolverine: So what needs doing? Any explosives involved?
