EDIT
Darkwatch, Neo Contra, Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders and more!
AIRED:
On tonight's episode, X-Play previews Darkwatch. After a long, dry period of neglect and bleached cattle skulls, western-themed video games are kicking in the saloon doors once again. The latest tough hombre to do so is Darkwatch’s Jericho Cross, dressed in black with a glowing red eye. The X-Play gang was finishing up glasses of milk when this guy sat down and ordered a tall glass of blood. That’s when we figured that something isn’t quite right.

The retro revolution continues with Konami’s latest revamp, Neo Contra. Taking the venerable late-'80s shooter and updating it with new wave PlayStation 2 graphics seems like a great idea -- it certainly worked with Gradius and R-Type -- but are the results everything old school gamers hoped and dreamed? X-Play turns on the wayback machine and finds out.

Rarely are video games considered acquired tastes. People usually form their opinions quickly, and find that those impressions stay faithful throughout the game-playing experience. Kingdom Under Fire is the stark exception, as its steep learning curve and slow buildup lead into something that, while flawed, proves to be a more satisfying piece of software than you may first anticipate.

Lately Nintendo’s been trying to revive the Kirby franchise with an insultingly awful cartoon and new Game Boy adventures. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is the latest candy-colored entry in the Kirby saga that tries to inject some much-needed innovation into the series, but comes up short in the end.

Jonesing for a good game based in the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Well, we finally got one. All you nerds can stop pushing your little metallic figurines around. Instead, plop yourself down in front of your computer monitor and get ready for some retro-futuristic carnage, because Warhammer has never looked so good.
