  • Morgan's gone, Adam's sick and Kristin is in short shorts. An odd day on the X-Play set.

    7.5
While it may seem refreshing to see a different Co-Host on X-play every now and then, it makes you appreciate just how well Adam and Morgan work together. Morgan didn't appear in this episode and had Kristin Holt from Cheat! as the Guest Host. And while Holt did wear something that was quite revealing (well not really since she is a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader) it couldn't distract me enough in her possibly poorly written dialogue with Adam. Sometime it felt forced, with no feeling and the cadence in her voice works well for Cheat! doesn't work as well on X-Play. Granted it didn't help that Adam had a sore throat; however it made the episode even more surreal. Morgan was gone yet her voice was present for some of the reviews, and Adam's voice was ailing yet was perfect during the reviews. The episode didn't work...but in a way it did. And while the Tony Hawk game got a just a little better review score then the Sonic game, Morgan's commentary on the Hawk game was much more scathing and a bit more fun. While it was fun to look at Kristin and I can hope she only gets better in tune with the X-Play show.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Adam has a sore throat on this episode and mentions the fact at the beginning; however his review segments were done prior to his illness since they sound normal.

  • QUOTES (8)

  • NOTES (1)

    • Episode title references welcoming "Old Friends." Every game reviewed in this epsisode is a sequel of sorts in a game francise, and in every case except 1701 A.D., a large successful francise with recognizable characters (Castlevania, Sonic, Tony Hawk).

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Cultural Icon - L. Ron Hubbard
During the Review for 1701 A.D., Morgan mention's L. Ron Hubbard's name when a volcano erupts during the game. Although he is credited with creating the Scientology religion, he is also known for being the author of a self-help book called Dianetics, which featured a picture of an erupting volcano on the book's cover.

    • Cultural Icon - Bob Ross
During the Review for Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Adam makes numerous comical connections between the painter vampire Brauner and PBS painter Bob Ross. For 12 years, Ross hosted "The Joy of Painting" and was known for his soft pleasant voice, "Happy little clouds" and quick-learning techniques in oil paiting. Ross passed away in 1995.
