The title Hooves & Harlots is a reference to the Centaurs and the Amazons, respectively.
This is the only episode where we see Gabrielle with the eagle headed staff given to her by Ephiny. They did, however, intend to bring it back at the beginning of the fifth season when Gabrielle went back to being a fighter. Instead they gave her a new weapon, her sais.
The Amazon Nation was structurally based upon the Iroquois Confederation, with different tribes being ruled by separate Queens but still linked by kinship.
As of this episode, Gabrielle now fights with a staple weapon; a battle staff.
The weapon chosen by Queen Melosa for her fight against Xena, called "chobos", were based on the real life Philippine escrima fighting sticks. Steven L. Sears, who is a skilled martial artist himself and has trained with escrima, made up the name "chobos" since he wanted them to be free from any non Grecian references.
Goofs
Gabrielle (as an Amazon Princess) challenges Queen Melosa and chooses Xena as her champion. When Xena wins the battle, Gabrielle should have become queen. Instead, when Tyldus later challenges the Amazon queen, Xena steps out. And in the end, Melosa has miraculously become queen again.
On Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, this episode originally was scheduled to air on Saturday 6th September 1997. However, in the week beforehand, Diana Princess of Wales had been killed, with her funeral falling on that day. Presumably due to the parallels of an Amazon Princess being killed in the episode, the episode was changed to 'The Black Wolf' at the last minute. ('Hooves & Harlots' was eventaully broadcast the following week).
Gabrielle: I just thought it would be great to be an Amazon. I didn't realize what it meant. But, I've learned my lesson. Everything I know, you know. From now on, no more secrets. Xena: We'll see how long that lasts.
Ephiny: Come, now. Gabrielle: I'm sorry, you must have me mistaken for a pet. Ephiny: Would you come with me? Gabrielle: That's better.
Melosa: Gabrielle, do you want to fight me to the death? Gabrielle: Not really.
Gabrielle: (in response to Xena's silent hint) We gotta come up with hand signals or something.
Terreis: It's a man's world, Gabrielle. Not because it should be, but because we let them have it.
Gabrielle: Don't judge a scroll by it's paper!
Xena: Something about me you find interesting? Ephiny: Yes. Xena: Wanna tell me? Ephiny: No. Xena: Then stop staring at me, before I take your eyes out.
Xena does not use her chakram in this episode.
Colin Moy (Phantes) went on to play Galantis in the episode "Little Problems" and Augustus in the episode "Livia", both on Xena. He also played Jaris in an episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. In addition, he was in one episode of Legend of the Seeker, which was created by Robert Tapert (who also created Xena) and who is married to Lucy Lawless.
Alison Bruce (Melosa) also played Kahina in the episode "Legacy" and Talia in the episode "Animal Attraction", both on Xena. She also appeared in one episode of Hercules.
This is the first appearance of Danielle Cormack as Ephiny. She also was in three episodes of Hercules (though only two as Ephiny), and played the role of Samsara in the fifth season Xena episode "Lifeblood". In addition, she played the villainess Raina on Cleopatra 2525, Catherine the Great on Jack of All Trades and Shota on Legend of the Seeker; all of these shows were produced by Rob Tapert, who is married to Lucy Lawless.
Danielle Cormack (Ephiny) has said that performing in an Amazon mask was something of a nightmare, especially during fight scenes, since she could barely see through it.
The Amazon Nation was structurally based upon the Iroquois Confederation, with different tribes being ruled by separate Queens but still linked by kinship.
Renee has said that her outfit up to this episode was her Little House on the Prairie costume. This episode featured the last time it was worn.
This episode's script number is 109.
