You Can't Win (1966)

Show Summary

Welcome to the You Can't Win (1966) guide at

Based on the novels Scenes from Provincial Life (1950) and Scenes from Married Life (1961) by H.S. Hoff (writing as William Cooper), You Can't Win (1966) told the story of Joe Lunn, an aspirant young novelist in 1939, and picked up his story as he faced up to middle age. "I write about the real world and real people in it." The characters were so real, in fact, that a threatened libel action prevented the publication of the second novel, Scenes from Metropolitan Life (1982) until after the death of the woman who served as the template for Myrtle.
